On The Possibility Of An Apple Standalone Camera | iLounge
May 14, 2021 - A few days ago, I mentioned that we’d heard claims—initially quite firm, and then not so firm—that Apple is working on a standalone digital camera, specifically a point-and-shoot model designed to deliver image quality and zoom functionality beyond what iPhones, iPads, and iPods can deliver in their thinning bodies.

Ask HN: Why doesn’t Apple make a standalone camera? | Hacker News
September 10, 2021 - Moreover, popular camera software and build quality is just solidly “okay” in my experience · My thought is that if Apple were to produce full-size cameras, they would be far better than anything else on the market. I would probably buy one immediately

Continuity Camera Turns an iPhone Into a Mac Webcam | VMUG
It’s unclear if Apple plans to improve webcam specs in future models, but there’s an alternative that works now—repurposing the iPhone’s optically superb cameras as a Mac webcam. This is not a new idea. Elgato offers Epoccam software to pull this off.

Obviously phone cameras don’t really compare to actual cameras. But for what they are, they’re pretty great, it makes me wonder how nice their cameras would be if they made them?
Why don’t they?

What would it do? What would it have to stand out, Apple's processing? Who is the market for a standalone camera with phone camera processing? Apple doesn't make camera sensors so they would be buying from someone else, probably Sony like they do with their phones. What mount will it use? Will apple suddenly start designing and manufacturing lenses?

The market is far too small for Apple to bother with.

It already supports using the iPhone camera for facetime and I assume other video chats. This isn't necessary. Apple is just going to say buy an iPhone to use as a camera.

Why are people fighting this so hard? This makes total sense and would be amazing. I'd set it up in a heartbeat if it were possible.

Generally, it’s the same reason that people choose to use a DSLR or a film camera. Fine-tuned controls and/or intentionally-constrained creativity are beneficial aids for capturing compelling photographs. ProCamera is an app that I occasionally use, but I still use the native camera app for most purposes because of its instant-on and native quick access shortcuts

It’s not bad. It’s just that other apps do things that Apple’s doesn’t. Apple provides lots of functionality to third-party camera apps that isn’t available in the built-in one in an effort to keep the built-in one simpler.

3rd party apps like Snapchat, can capture and save photos from its app both forward and rear facing, but your built-in Camera app has bugs. If it was a hardware issue, no apps would be able to capture anything. I didn’t start having camera issues until Apple rolled out newer iOS versions.
