r/UXDesign on Reddit: Why is the Pay for this career so high? Is there a catch?
July 2, 2023 -
I’m a senior year highschool student looking into options on what to major in in college and heard about ux/ui design. It almost seems too good to be true with a pay of $70,000+ for entry level positions as well as Google handing out certificates that don’t even cost too much money. I don’t mean to disrespect the job by asking this, but what is it about ux/ui design that makes it so profitable? What’s the catch, because there’s no way there are none, and is it as “easy” as it seems to get a job as one? (By easy I mean actually putting in effort and treating it seriously like with any career, not just treating it like something that’ll be effortless)

The people telling you it’s easy to get into UX are selling you (or trying to sell you) something. UX design is a very valid and lucrative career and it also requires lots of education. The Google Coursera course is not enough to get you a job, despite what you have heard. If you look at posts in this sub as well as the pinned posts for advice about job searches, you’ll see how hard it is to find entry level jobs! I love being a UX designer and researcher and it’s also not for everyone. I’ve seen so many people try to get a job, thinking it’s an easy path to lots of money, then realize it’s a demanding job and just quit trying. Entry level jobs can start at 70k USD, but they also start at 50k USD. I’m at a senior level and make around 95k. You can certainly make more than this, but what you hear on YT and read in blog posts is skewed.

Everything I've seen posted in this thread is spot on. Good insight that I wish I had when I started. I'll add that this isn't a job, it's a profession. That might not make sense right away, but eventually you will see. A UX Designer is a Creative and Technical Professional. Being a professional means going pro. You have to be dedicated to evolving your craft and form a daily practice to grow. There just isn't a lot of opportunities to come in as a Junior and get the mentorship you need within a job, you'll have to actively grow on your own. Seek mentors, take education classes, and practice constantly. A lot falls on a UX Designer and almost all companies have no idea what design does. Product Managers will give you either descriptions that are too vague to design anything meaningful, or go the opposite direction and give you something they designed in Power Point and expect you to make it look pretty. Engineers will tell you that your designs aren't feasible and force you to make compromises on design that create a bad user experience. Or say your designs will take too long and delay the project. You're also accountable to Design Leadership, who look at these compromised designs that shipped, and come down on you for not being a good designer. Basically shit rolls downhill, and UX is often at the bottom of that hill. Last one praised but the first one to blame if a product doesn't ship or gets delayed. Especially in low-maturity organizations who don't understand what design does and say "Just do the UX." A UX Designer needs to navigate all these people, be strong self-advocate for themselves and design, and produce high quality designs at a rapid pace. They have to be knowledgable about human behavior, technology, and skilled at visual design. The job pays well because it's really hard and high pressure. And it's rare to be the type of person that can thrive in UX. You need to have the talent, experience, people skills, and great self-management to succeed. And those designers are rare. If you do something well that's hard for others to do, you will be paid well. Like almost all other creative professions, it's a meat grinder and those who can't hack it drop out. I'm not trying to scare you, I just hate to see another person waste time and money getting into this career without first understanding the reality. If it is a good fit for you, then it can be a great career choice. There is a lot of upside to being good in this career. But it will require dedication.
