The USB-C port on the multi-port adapter is for power delivery to the Mac only. I'm surprised the Apple personnel you talked to did not know this. You would need a port duplicator plugged in to the regular USB port to get additional data transfer ports. It’s only for charging the Mac.

So it might be confusing but that port is to charge the device it’s connected to. So you’d use this on your Mac, and then plug your Mac charger into that port. It’s so you can still charge your MAC while taking up a USBC port. Really only useful on older Mac’s with single USBC ports.
