As the title says I just bought a 41mm Apple Watch 7 with 93% battery. It’s my first Apple watch and bought it to dip my toes into the water to see if I like Apple Watches. What are everyone’s thoughts? Is it still a decent watch? And how many years can I expect to get out of it?

It’s definitely a nice one as the first watch. It will serve a few years if the battery is ok. I have the same exact one which I bought in December 2021 and the battery health is already below 80%. Only this is making me think of upgrading

I expect the Series 6-8, Ultra 1, and SE to be dropped at the same time, since they share a CPU and that’s what happened with the Series 4 and 5 and the SE1. The Series 5 launched in 2019, and lost support in 2024 - 5 years of support. If the Series 8 gets the same, then it would get dropped in 2027, when watchOS 14 releases (so the Series 8 would be on OS 13). So I’d expect software support on your 7 for another 3 years or so. But even when it’s dropped, it will still pair with newer iPhones, and you still occasionally see someone using the original model, so they absolutely can keep going long after support ends. It’s definitely still a good watch. It’s mostly a 6 with a bigger screen, but that’s no bad thing - I upgraded from my 6 to a 10, and I do think there’s enough there to make it a worthwhile upgrade - but it was far from essential. Apart from a somewhat degraded battery, it was still an excellent device.

A few key dates:
Apple Watch SE (gen 1) originally launched in Sept 2020.
Apple Watch SE (gen 2) originally launched in Sept 2022.
watchOS11 released in Sep 2024.
Support for Apple Watch SE (gen 1) was dropped.
That's 4 years of support if you bought the watch when it was released. 3.75 years for me. And for any poor people who bought it summer 2022, that's 2 years of OS updates that you've been allowed.
That's planned obsolescence at its most shameless and inexusable. I think that is the tipping point. Apple has had its last dime from me.
Update:
The reason I want more years of OS support isn't for the "features", it's because watchOS 10.x has de-stabilised the watch, badly. Now I can't update the OS because Apple forbids it. And I can't downgrade the OS because, you guessed it, Apple forbids it. Handcuffed. Locked to a version that is unstable.
If had been informed before purchase that the OS would only be granted 4 years of updates, I'd never have bought it. I would respect that frankness. I'd agree that it should be longer, but I'd respect Apple's transparency. But this surprise after 4 years is pitiful.

If you think that’s bad, just wait until you hear about the Series 3. It was still available for months after watchOS 9 was announced and confirmed to drop support for it. Was finally discontinued when the Series 8 was announced. So you could’ve purchased a Series 3 on September 6, 2022, and lost watchOS support a week later on September 13.

The Watch still works, it’s not like it’s exploding now. Watch os updates are so minimal anyway so you’re not missing out on anything.
