First of all, both S8 and S9 are great watches, you can't go wrong with either of those! Unless you have a specific need for stainless steel Apple watches (e.g. sapphire glass, better aesthetic), I would recommend to get the latest generation of tech products that you are willing to pay. It will have newer tech (new chip, double tap, brighter display... etc in this case). Paying for better material on a regular watch makes sense to me as I'll keep my watches for a very long time, may even pass to the next generation(s). However, I'm fully aware that I'm going to upgrade my Apple Watches (or tech products in general) every few years, I just don't find the added cost to be justified. I would recommend the aluminum S9 unless you really need to sapphire glass or stainless steel body. More on reddit.com

I’m trying to pick between these two options, since they’re both around $500 pre-tax.
The Series 9 stainless is about $215 more. That’s more than I’m willing to spend on an Apple Watch.
The Series 9 offers the new S9 chip, 64gb storage and 2000 nits display, but has the aluminium body and non-sapphire crystal.
The Series 8 in steel has a sapphire crystal, S8 chip, 32 gb and 1000 nits display.
I guess the question I’m grappling with is whether to get the 2000 nits Ion-X display (series 9) or the 1000 nits sapphire display (series 8).
I plan to use it outdoors for running/swimming.
Any thoughts?

S8 stainless steel. Far more premium look and feel. Sapphire is more resistant to light scratching. Only thing to note is if you are the type that does not use wearables eg dress watches etc, the aluminum Apple watches will. Add less weight to your wrist
