It is $13 a month forever it seems..... I guess I will basically never get the new model phone...
What's your folks thoughts?
I recently upgraded my partner's iphone 15 through Costco and it came with Applecare+, though without the theft and loss coverage. I read up that there is still a window within 60 days to upgrade our Applecare+ plan to include theft and loss coverage, however it would involve refunding our current (approx $150 pro-rated) and buying the new plan entirely for $269 + tax, losing any savings going through Costco.
Is it worth upgrading the coverage for that peace of mind, or is it not worth it?
Just want to share my great experience with AppleCare+ Theft and Loss for anyone who may be interested lol. I’m in the USA.
8/28/22: iPhone Pro 12 was stolen from my pocket at a bar. It was immediately switched off and not trackable via Find My iPhone.
8/29/22: Submitted my claim via AIG Theft and Loss. Process was very smooth and took no more than 5 minutes. $149 deductible was irritating but it’s what I signed up for.
8/30/22: Checked my claim status and noticed the AIG site required proof of purchase and an ID. I called AIG to ask some questions, and they told me my claim was already approved and I didn’t need to submit anything else. The call rep said the website is not updated live (it still doesn’t say the claim was approved as of today with the replacement phone in my hand), but to call again if I wanted updates and to expect a tracking number within 1-3 BDs and the replacement phone to follow 1-3 BDs thereafter.
8/31/22: Called AIG again for an update and to my pleasant surprise, they already had a FedEx tracking number and that my phone would be delivered by the following day.
9/1/22 (today): Just got my replacement Pro 12 this afternoon!
So in sum, it took under FOUR days from the claim submission date to the replacement phone being in my hands. Have to say I’m very impressed and I’m never going without AppleCare+ Theft and Loss ever again. Happy to answer any questions!
I was initially going to get AC+ with Theft & Loss protection but then I found out in order to make a Theft and Loss claim, Find My has to be activated at the time of loss/theft. I usually never have that on, in order to save battery life.
I always get AC+, but I think if I get Theft & Loss I’ll set a Shortcut to automatically turn on Find My when wifi is disabled. I always turn off wifi when I leave the house, but I probably won’t remember to activate Find My too.
What does everyone else do?
Don’t really know where to start with this one…
Was out of town working on a music festival and had my iPhone 13 Pro pickpocketed. Placed the phone in lost mode and filed a claim through AIG’s portal soon as I had connection. Messaged Apple Customer Support on my iPad, asked three separate times if an in-store replacement would be honored given the nature of the program and three separate times was told that it was, so at the suggestion of the rep I made an appointment for the local Best Buy.
Afternoon comes and Best Buy says they don’t handle theft + loss claims only Apple does (this is in spite of the support rep telling me the previous evening I would have the same experience at Best Buy as I would at Apple). So I walked across the literal highway and two shopping malls to the nearest Apple Store.
Store has multiple lines out the door, once I manage to get inside and get a walk-in appointment set up the manager tells me they won’t honor device replacements in store (again, after their OWN support rep told me multiple times not even 12 hours ago that they would). I explain the circumstances of my predicament and he calls Apple Support on his personal phone (because the store’s doesn’t work) trying to find someone to help. Takes him about 30-45 minutes to get on the phone with a “senior advisor” who tells me that Apple doesn’t handle any of the claim information and can’t access claim information for devices they’re ostensibly insuring. After trying unsuccessfully to check the status of the claim via their website (it refused to log me in and still does), the advisor tells me I can call the third-party insurer to check the status of the claim, at which point I asked how I was supposed to call them without a phone. So after three hours of going nowhere and my patience wearing thin, the representative disconnects the call and leaves me in the store sobbing in front of the sales associates (despite their tireless efforts).
I have no way to contact my superiors, family, or friends, and on a job site where connection is already dismal. Burner phone wasn’t an option either since the site’s WiFi is the only means of contacting the outside world with 100,000+ attendees clogging up the cellular signal.
I’m sure there will be plenty of devil’s advocates and Monday Morning Quarterbacks in the comments, but what I can’t for the life of me fathom is how a customer can spend $1,500+ on a phone with insurance, practice all the right proactive measures, and in the absolute worst case scenario still be left out in the cold with no device.
Tl;dr: Phone got stolen at a music festival I was working, Apple Support gave misleading information on their own practices, store was of no help, claim stuck in limbo
UPDATE: Did not expect this thread to get as many replies as it did. After 36 straight hours of being sent on a fucking wild goose chase by the numnuts at Apple Support, I left site and used a friend’s phone to call AIG, a lady assisted me with filing the claim, and it was approved instantaneously upon payment of the deductible. I still won’t have the device till Friday, well after I leave site.
The fact that the claim was approved as soon as it was tells me more than anything else that it IS just a cynical cash grab, not some BS having to do with conducting some kind of thorough review or investigation. The resources to offer me a replacement were perfectly available in store but unable to be accessed due to Apple’s insistence on locking all of their customer support staff out of any kind of system override. I would also like to take this time to extend my middle finger in the direction of all the Devil’s Advocates on here and note that I spent over a half hour on the phone with Apple Support trying to find the right department to handle T&L claims, and even after speaking with a “senior advisor” was STILL given the wrong contact information for AIG - I had to hunt it down myself on their website. And what pissed me off even more were the people acting like there weren’t tangible solutions to this problem - we already know Apple is capable of remotely bricking a device. How about the same procedure as any other rental? Credit/debit card on file to charge in the event the customer doesn’t return the loaner.
It’s almost 3am and I have to be up for a ten hour shift at 7, so I should probably get some rest. Thanks for all the sympathies, made me feel a little bit better about my predicament. And the festival was Lost Lands for those who were curious. Send some energy to Legend Valley - I’m gonna need it these next few days.
Fuck Apple.
Hello everyone! Currently, I have an iPhone Xr with AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss. I'm planning to upgrade to an iPhone 13 in the next couple weeks/months, and I'm currently stuck on whether to buy AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss.
I've never actually lost my phone, or had it stolen, but I do use AppleCare's benefits.
I'm somewhat of a paranoid person about my phone getting stolen, but I'm not sure if the extra peace of mind is worth the extra money. What do you guys think?
(also, I'm planning to buy it for 2 years, not monthly, if that matters.)
i got my 17 Pro Max and i’m debating whether to get it or not, i’ve heard mixed opinions
I got my new iPhone 14 pro on release day and the option to get Apple care is running out soon. So I’m undecided what coverage to get. Will there be questions asked when it gets stolen?
What happens when I get a replacement for a lost phone and it winds up in the future?
I’ll be happy to hear your experiences with the coverages.
For those interested in applecare+ timeframe; I had a good experiece with the whole replacement process.
(07/27) Lost My phone during a rollercoaster ride. FindMy was activated when it happened but the device fell underwater and probably died within 30 minutes. I submitted a claim and paid a $150 deductible the same day at 11:00 PM and was immediately approved.
(07/28) At around 1:00PM, I received email that my replacement phone was on its way.
(07/29) Received update from FedEx that my phone was scheduled to be delivered by 07/30 before noon.
(07/30) No phone received because of FedEx shenanigans
(07/31) Finally received my replacement phone by 9:00 AM
For anyone wondering if it’s worth getting AppleCare+, I surely believe it is. There were times that I really thought about cancelling since I had never used it before and because I am usually pretty careful with the device. I’m happy that I didn’t do so.
I had my phone stolen out my hands on Wednesday (London, UK). It had FMI activated and I was able to put it into lost mode less then ten minutes later. I immediately reported it to the police and filed a claim through the AppleCare website, and received an email with a case ID.
Its been 48 hours and if I try and log in to the AIG case tracker, it says it doesn't recognise the case ID. I’ve called AIG, who are unable to find the case ID, my phone number or my phone’s serial number on their system. Is this normal? How long does it take for AIG to receive the claim from Apple? Will I receive an email telling me when I need to do something, or do I just have to keep checking the AIG site and calling them? I’ve not been very impressed with the process so far!
Got my brand new iPhone 16 Pro 256GB. Now Apple offers AppleCare+ @$13.99/mo or yearly @$139.99/yr and those plans include Theft and loss.
However after speaking with an Apple rep on the phone, he said they can still off the older AppleCare plan for $199 for two years which does NOT include theft and loss.
Any thoughts on better insurance plan here? I'm thinking bite the bullet, initiate a year at $139.99 and include Theft and loss. At least the first year. Is saving $80 over two years worth it assuming the risk of loss and stolen is low? Just thinking out loud here with Reddit.
I left my iPhone 11 Pro in a cab last Wednesday night at about 11:30 PM. I had Find My iPhone enabled when I lost my phone and for literally the entire time I owned and was in possession of the device (just under 2 years). I purchased theft and lost protection when I bought the phone, and the coverage is good until 10/11/2021. Now here's where everything goes terribly wrong. Within 30 minutes of me losing my phone (and before I realized it was lost) whomever found it managed to figure out (??) my passcode (which was not a series of 0s or a set of sequential numbers, tyvm) and get into my device. All I can think is I left enough smudges on the glass after a masked-up evening out that they were able to decipher it. Once in, at 11:56 PM they changed my Apple ID password, and at 11:57 PM they turned off Find My iPhone. At 5:30 in the morning, they opened an apple credit card and changed my billing information. I know the timing of all of this because I found the emails noting the changes they made in my apple mail trash once I was able to regain control of my Apple ID. The changes they made logged me out all of my other trusted devices, and prevented me tracking my phone, placing the phone in lost mode, or erasing it. The changes also required me to purchase a new phone before I could actually re-take control of my apple ID because although I was still in possession of my recovery key, I couldn't use it without a trusted device and the apple chat support I was using while phoneless could do nothing to assist. What additional havoc the finder of my iPhone caused while they were in control of my apple id is a harrowing story for another time. To get to the point -- over the course of endless support calls with apple advisors who didn't really believe it was possible for anyone to do what they did with the security measures I had in place, I was advised to remove the lost phone from my apple account (due to the fact that my apple id was compromised). Now, since my lost Apple 11 Pro has been removed from the list of my devices on my apple ID I am unable to even start a claim on my theft and loss protection. I have spoken to many, many AppleCare support advisors at this point who have basically told me that because of what the person who has my phone was able to do (change my Apple password/turn off Find my iPhone) and what I did to secure myself afterwards (remove the 11 Pro from my apple account) there is no way for me to even begin to make a claim even though the policy is still active and I didn't turn off Find my iPhone myself. I have the emails showing the changes made while they were in control of my device, the most recent backup of my iPhone 11 Pro (from the day before it was lost) would show that Find My iPhone was active, I have a number of friends and family members who could testify to the fact that they can literally ALWAYS see where I am via Find My, the lost phone itself still shows as covered on checkcoverage.apple.com. I even have a screen grab from when I was trying to activate lost mode from my iPad and getting an error. I've talked to many very nice and understanding support technicians at AppleCare, some nice ones who sympathized to an extent while clearly still believing I was nuts, and one certifiable jerk (I'm looking at you Alex). NONE of the above could help me file a claim. The only thing they can do is give me a partial refund on my worthless $300 AppleCare coverage -- all of $62 if I chose to accept. So reddit, any ideas, spells or incantations to offer that I might try next? Honestly getting this phone covered is really the least of my concerns with what this person managed to do while in control of my Apple ID, but I also feel it is extremely unfair that I will not be covered on a policy I paid for due the skill of the mastermind who happened upon my iPhone. I crave justice!!
Apple has quietly changed how you can buy AppleCare+, and not in a good way. Previously, you could pay a one-time fee for 2 or 3 years of coverage upfront. Now, that option is gone—you’re only allowed to pay monthly or annually for coverage.
On top of that, Apple removed the cheaper AppleCare+ plan that covered accidental damage but didn’t include Theft & Loss protection. Now, if you want AppleCare+, you’re stuck paying for the full package—including Theft & Loss—even if you don’t want/need it.
TLDR:
No more one-time payment for AppleCare+ (only monthly or annual payments).
Cheaper plan without Theft & Loss has been removed—now you must pay for full coverage.
These changes make AppleCare+ more expensive over time and remove flexibility for users.
So my sister bought me a 15 Pro Max in USA and she's bringing it to me next month. And since I live in a country where a phone like that has a high probability of being stolen I was thinking of getting the theft and loss plan. Paying 270 for two years peace of mind is a no brainier. I'm not looking to get advice about wether I should get it or not.
I just wanted to know what instance made you use it and what was the process like? Also is it better to pay monthly or a lump sum? Thanks
TLDR: Apple's deductibles on repairs and delays in returning my computer made me cancel AppleCare+ which repeatedly told me I would not be able to renew if cancelled. I cancelled it anyway and now five days later they're offering a renewal on that exact same computer. Just thought ya'll should know that Apple be lying to customers
Note: Linked URL is my post with images of my cancellation receipt and new renewal offer
UPDATE 5/19:
Thank you for everyone's recommendations to talk to Apple Support. I wanted to clarify that the only reason why I hadn't at this point is that, in my time zone, Apple Support had closed for the day.
I ended up contacting Support this morning and informed them of my situation. They said that what I had was a genuine issue, as if I did have AppleCare, it is connected with a different agency for Apple Italy than it is for AppleCare USA. So, in actuality, I needed to confirm with Apple Italy that I can still be covered in the US. They tried contacting them for me, but they had closed for the day, so I will be calling them when they open at midnight PST. Typically they have to consult with Agreement managers on the transferring of AppleCare country-to-country via phone, which can make it tedious.
She also informed me that my product never actually discontinued, as it continued to have "Limited Warranty" connected to my account as a placeholder, and there was no notice on mine or hers that service had discontinued. I hope this provides better insight into my issue, and I am looking to see if this has happened to anyone else.
And for comments' sake, I bought the iPhone 16 Pro as well as AppleCare+ w/ Theft and Loss on release date from an Apple store in Milan, Italy. Everything was completed in-house, and there were no third-party retailers in any transaction.
Have a good day, everyone!
ORIGINAL:
Hi everyone! I just had my phone stolen, in I went to file a Theft with AppleCare only to have found my AppleCare+ quietly discontinued.
For context, I had my phone stolen back in September when I first was studying abroad in Italy, in which I was very careful to get AppleCare+ Theft/Loss on my new iPhone 16. I noticed I was getting automatically charged every month until I stopped getting the emails when I returned back to the US. I never cancelled the subscription, and there was no notice that I had cancelled my subscription. I'm frustrated because I'm not sure if I can even qualify for Theft/Loss coverage, and that would be $1300 down the drain due to this technical AppleCare+ issue.
Has anyone ever experienced this? I don't even know what I can do at this point.
Bought 13P in Sep'21 with Applecare+ with Theft & Loss. Continued the Applecare+ on a month-to-month basis at $13.49/month. Should I cancel Applecare at this point? I've never needed a repair so far.
Battery health finally reached 80% (was at 81% for whole year) but I don't think I'll get the free battery replacement until it gets to 79% which might be a while.
Phone was stolen by a sophisticated thief who shoulder surfed my iPhone passcode. With that they were able to gain access to all of my digital accounts including the ability to turn off Find My.
Turns out if Find My is disabled your stolen device coverage is null. Apple/AIG now denying my claim due to this ridiculous term. Any thief knows to turn off Find My…
Do not give them a cent if you actually want coverage, go thru your carriers insurance instead. Never thought I’d tout any carrier service but Apple has really fallen off here
How long they covered if you get it?
