I can't think of the name and my Google-Foo is failing me. (it keeps showing me things like Outrun and other driving games.) This was a sitdown game that was fairly unique at the time. The "car" was more of a futuristic cart and you raced down a tube. You could go rotate all the way around the tube (upside down, etc), and there were glowing red "boost" spots that you would aim for.I loved this game but kind of forgot about it.
Hi, I was chatting recently about early arcade games from the 80s. In the UK i can remember a game that seemed to be projected on to a screen and you moved the car from left to right. It was very 2D ... If you hit an obstacle the car spun and a heavy rock track played.
My questions are what was the game called and can anyone remember the music that played after a crash... an ACDC riff has been mention but we a not sure...
Many thanks.....
Platform(s): Arcade coin-op
Genre: Racing
Estimated year of release: late 80s, early 90s. I remember playing it when I was a kid a the local parish, next to it there was a wrestling game and I'm pretty sure it was WWF Superstars that was released in 1989, the racing game seemed older judging by the graphics though
Graphics/art style: The graphics looked outdated at the time already. The visual was top down like in Spy hunter but the graphics and sprites were worse. Iirc the car you used was yellow and/or red (could be wrong about this one) but I don't remember if you could choose your car (I don't think so)
Notable characters: --
Notable gameplay mechanics: The player was always driving from the bottom of the screen toward the top, the cars weren't really steering, they were just moving horizontally on the screen, pretty much like in Spy hunter (the car actually steers sometimes in spyhunter sweetness, but if you watch the linked video you should understand what I'm talking about).
I remember there were other cars to overtake as well as obstacles to avoid like little lakes, I'm pretty sure you could jump over lakes but I can't remember if there was a dedicated jump button or if you had to use a ramp or something. I'd say there were also things (logs?) to jump over, but maybe my memory is tricking me. I was 4 or 5 at the time so the memories are kinda confused
I can't remember if there were checkpoints or what caused the game to end, but if you fell into lakes you just respawned somewhere before the lake.
Other details: Idk if it could help but I'm Italian so at the end of the 80s that game was playable here, given that the local parish didn't have a lot of money to spend I suppose the game could have been older and they bought an old videogame to save money. The cabinet was red and white iirc
Edit: Fixed the name of the linked game. Thanks guys for the hint
Just thinking about all the different arcade racing games we got in the 90s like Daytona, Cruis’n etc and I wanted to get people’s ideas on the definitive game of that decade:
