Definitely proprietary. Nouveau makes video output on everything, but proprietary driver on Nvidia gpu does it faster:) Answer from HyperWinX on reddit.com

For a non-gaming setup, is Nouveau enough or do I still need Nvidia? / Kernel & Hardware / Arch Linux Forums
Performance speaking, is there any reason for me to use the official Nvidia drivers or nouveau is enough? ... Official drivers will give you better power management (though you could also just disable the card). Otherwise you probably won't notice a difference. Nouveau may allow you to use wayland with less bugs? Not sure on that one. Allan-Volunteer on the (topic being discussed) mailn lists. July 11, 2024 -

So as the title says, I'm installing Arch and been wondering which drivers should I choose. (I'm am Arch noob so don't really know which is the best option).

The three options are: - nvidia (proprietary) - nvidia (open/source nouveau driver) - nvidia (open kernel module for newer GPUs, Touring +)

My question is which one is best for me. I plan to game and use PC for school. I have a 3070 and AMD 3700x.

If you can, please explain to me which one does what and their pros and cons.

Edit: thank you all for helping :)

I have / had the most luck with nvidia-drivers version 280.13 for xorg-server 1.10.3 ( most stable and good performance ) if you are running xorg-server 1.11 - this might be a problem: ( source: Gentoo ebuild history for your version: 285.05.09 ) Due to a regression in X that requires a deprecated function to be copied into the nvidia-drivers binary component, there is a significant performance degradation with xorg-server-1.11. As a result I'm re-marking this release as not supporting xorg-server-1.11. bug #385669 ยท are you talking about the trapezoids issue? if yes then arch's xorg-server package is already patched: http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/ โ€ฆ

r/archlinux on Reddit: Nouveau, NVIDIA, or NVIDIA Optimus?
September 16, 2021 -

I recently purchased a Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15ITL05 laptop and I installed Arch Linux on it. On my old laptop [Acer Aspire E1-571G] I used Nouveau and didn't care about NVIDIA drivers. It was working OK. However, with my new laptop I'm not sure if it's the right choice. I feel that the closed-source NVIDIA drivers might provide me with a lot more features than Nouveau. Which graphics driver do you suggest that I use? Nouveau, NVIDIA, or NVIDIA Optimus? What other useful GPU related apps should I install on my laptop to get the best graphics experience?

P.S: This is the output of neofetch on my laptop:

CPU: 11th Gen Intel i7-1165G7 (8) @ 4.700GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce MX450
GPU: Intel TigerLake-LP GT2 [Iris Xe Graphics]

  1. Hi, I want to know how NVIDIA GTX 10 Series graphic cards performance on Arch. Which is better in term of nvidia proprietary driver or nouveau open source driver. I plan to build new pc and to install Arch. I have never been buying new pc before. My old pc is about 10 years ago and I installed Arch on it, no issues. So I don't know about modern hardware and want to know about your experience with NVIDIA GTX 10 Series graphic cards.

  2. How about AMD graphic cards with open source driver? Is it better than NVIDIA?

  3. I have google some information about it, and some said it was better with NVIDIA and some said it was better with AMD.

  4. If you don't mind, could you please share with me your PC hardware specification, what hardware did you use for Arch.

  5. Thanks for any advices.

January 31, 2023 - As others have said you should be fine with nouveau. I would stick with that as long as it works. ... I had odd issues in the past as well with older nvidia GPUs using the proprietary drivers. For me, the desktop experience was also impacted. I find with newer GPUs, this is not an issue, but you're not going to buy a new GPU just to have the proprietary drivers work better. Like @f33dm3bits , unless you're doing video editing or playing games, I don't see a need for proprietary drivers.

r/archlinux on Reddit: Is Nouveau worth using now maybe?
July 13, 2024 -

I know everyone with nvidia has pretty much bitten the forbidden fruit of proprietary drivers (if you care about such things, I sleep well at night with my proprietary drivers even if it is foolish), but with the recent news of Ben Skeggs getting hired on with Nvidia and recent patches and updates for nouveau I'm wondering if we may soon be better suited using it instead of the proprietary drivers, since this will at least be open sourced and devs will have an easier time making software that actually works with it and not have to deal with programming for a black box.

Personally I recall my first install many years ago and having a tough time with nouveau and then after blacklisting the driver all my troubles went away, but lately nvidia proprietary has been difficult and resulting in some weird behavior like my one monitor working for boot and bios and then going to sleep when I hit my login manager while the other two screens remain functioning no issue. Also not to mention the issues with wayland and sway, I know there have been improvements but some of us like myself (Running an Nvidia GeForce 1050 Ti) are still incapable of running plasma wayland or sway without the sway-nvidia package.

It would be awesome to see improvements for the open source driver to the point of superseding the proprietary driver and props to Ben for the job congrats man! But I'm also curious to hear everyone else's opinions on it or experiences with the driver since the new patches.

the nouveau drivers work fine on my 1060 for driving a display. For gaming not at all. It does seem like the development is heading towards being able to run games, 3d aplications, video encoding/decoding and not just basic video output. I see it being years away tho

You're making a lot of assumptions here about Ben, his role at nvidia, and the company's stance on his work. For all we know, this work was a backlog of stuff he did before starting at nvidia. There's a big difference between "Ben's (and potentially others') role at nvidia is (or includes significant time for) working on the nouveau driver" and "nvidia is allowing Ben to continue to publish specific work to nouveau so long as it doesn't distract from his real work." There's some really good work happening around the open source nvidia stack, for sure. The work happening on nvk is exciting as are some of the patch sets you mentioned. nvidia itself has published some good work with their nvidia-open kernel module (that they intend to make the default relatively soon). Several people are predicting that by the end of 2024, you can probably run a fully open stack for nvidia with something like a 20% performance hit for gaming against the proprietary driver. I think that's probably a reasonable take. Will that make nouveau worth using? Maybe? I suppose it depends on your use case.
