Can you connect the Arduino Ethernet Shield directly to the computer with no router?
The physical connection should work: https://docs.wiznet.io/Product/iEthernet/W5100/overview Support Auto-MDIX That means you don't need a special crossover cable for this and can use any ordinary Ethernet cable. Also, most Ethernet ports nowadays are Auto-MDIX. The networking aspects are a bit more complicated. You need to assign addresses to things, and set up routing. With Windows, the simplest way is internet connection sharing. More on reddit.com

any cheap alternative to an Ethernet shield?
The route that I'm about to take is to pick up a raspberry-pi and do a serial link between that and the arduino. for 55-60 bucks that will give me not only wi-fi but a whole host of options from apache to snmp support, etc al. More on reddit.com

Wifi Vs Ethernet Shield
FYI - Ethernet with an Arduino (either Wifi or Wired) is very very limited due to the lack of RAM. If you want to explore Internet connected devices, I'd honestly recommend a Raspberry Pi. More on reddit.com

Hi,

So I am pretty familiar with Arduino Uno, but basically know nothing about networking and IoT.

I bought the HiLetgo W5100 Ethernet Network Shield for Arduino. And I'm trying to get started.

I want to connect the Arduino Uno with the Ethernet Shield directly to my Laptop. I guess this would be creating a Local Network between my computer and Arduino? (Again I'm pretty new to IoT, so forgive me if I don't have the correct terminology.) Can anyone explain and walk me through how to do this?
