Purple switches are clicky and loud, while red switches are linear and silent. Reds are .5 faster then the purples, which are 1.5. So reds are better for gaming, and so are purples. Answer from LCShelzyYT on bestbuy.com

Razer Huntsman Optical Keyboard Review: Superb Purple Switches
Some might be a little irritated by the software or the sound of the switches. Some might (rightly) balk at the price. But we can't help but look over those things. Razer's Purple opto-mechanical switches are -- and we say this with no amount of undue hyperbole --absolutely superb. Razer Huntsman Optical Keyboard

June 19, 2019 - Currently, it's available on the Huntsman and Huntsman Elite keyboards, both of which are worth buying.Try the switches for yourself: Razer Huntsman ($130 at Amazon)Elite-class keyboard: Razer Huntsman Elite ($180 at Amazon) The opto-mechanical switch from Razer is equal parts simple and breathtaking. You can identify it by its purple color (compared to the green, orange, or yellow switches on other Razer keyboards).

They're completely, radically different. If possible, go to a big electronics store and try out a bunch of mechanical keyboards. Cherry Reds will feel extremely similar to Razer Yellows, and Cherry Blues (and Razer Greens) will feel kinda like Purples. Basically, go yellow if you want no feedback at all, go purple if you want a ton of feedback. Gamers seem to like reds/yellows because it's a "faster" switch, in terms of the time between when you start applying pressure and when the switch activates. Typists will almost always prefer Blues/Greens/Purples because it lets your brain know you successfully hit the key and, ultimately, leads to faster typing with fewer typos because you're not missing or second-guessing keystrokes. Personally, I hate Cherry MX Reds and and Razer Yellows and would rather have a membrane board than them, but it's entirely subjective. I'm on purples now, my favorite switch currently, but I also like blues and greens (and have both). As per "faster," in theory, purple is fastest (in terms of the time between switch actuation and the computer receiving the signal) but I very much doubt a human being could ever tell the difference. I can't. Purples, in terms of feel, are like a lighter blue/green with shorter travel. In my opinion, they offer a really good balance of the feedback of a green with the speed of a yellow. If you have no idea what you want, and you can't test them in real life, then you should get browns or oranges. These are the most balanced switches and can be treated as a "one size fits all" approach. Even I like Oranges.

Huntsman Mini (Purple Switches) Experience | Razer Insider
November 11, 2020 - Initially, I wanted to get the red switches but when I tried out the huntsman mini with the red switches on the shop, it doesn't feel like a mechanical keyboard and more like a membrane keyboard for some reason, so I decided to get the purple switches instead. Keep in mind that I am heavy gamer and I do some coding. After using the keyboard for a while, my thoughts are pretty conservative on the keyboard, its neither the best or worse keyboard and I don't mind that but the pinging noise that bothers me a lot especially when you press the backspace key.

Razer Keyboard Switches - How to Pick the RIGHT One
February 10, 2021 - In the tactile camp we would have ... Razer Purple optical, and the Mecha-Membrane, which is that hybrid mechanical switch. Let’s start with Linear switches and to me actuation force and the actuation point are the most important for a Linear switch. The Razer Yellow’s actuate at 45 grams and have a really low actuation point of 1.2mm with a total travel distance of 3.5mm. Razer Yellow are similar to the MX Speed, and if you love fast actuation this is a really good option, especially ...

Razer Developing Optical Keyboard Switches: Razer Purple (Updated) | Tom's Hardware
August 22, 2017 - They’re going to be fine switches, but it won’t be until the second or third generation that we’ll likely see more of the features that optical switches offer over and above what standard desktop switches do. However, there’s a hidden advantage there, and that’s why we’re referring to this as a “platform:” Once the hardware is perfected, the technological upgrades can primarily come in the form of firmware and software updates--including analog capabilities. Therefore, it’s not at all unreasonable that we could see a Razer keyboard ship with first-gen Purple optical switches, and then you could keep that same keyboard and load up second-gen Purple switches when they’re available, or at some point install a big firmware update that enables analog sensing.

Razer Huntsman Elite Review – Opto-Mechanical switches! | KitGuru
April 8, 2019 - With Cherry MX-based keyboards, most manufacturers offer you a choice of Reds, Blues, Browns and so on – meaning you can choose if you want a linear switch, a tactile switch, or a clicky switch. If you want an Opto-Mechanical switch, you have to get the Purple variant, which is tactile and clicky. If Razer can offer Opto-Mechanical versions of its Yellow and Orange switches, I think that would only help the appeal of the Huntsman Elite.

r/razer on Reddit: Red or Purple switches Huntsman TKL V2. ?
October 5, 2021 -

Hey everyone

TL;DR >> The title

I know this must be already asked (a lot) but the new Huntsman TKL seems to differ on its switches.

Will try to give direct and helpful facts about myself:

  • Owned a Blackwidow Chroma Stealth (purple switches) for ~7 years.

    • I love the fact that is not THAT noisy but I still can feel reaction

  • I've read about RED (v1) that it is really messy to write on them and even gaming, when you rest our fingers on the keys

  • I have never had a clicky switch (more than orange) so I don't really know if it'd bother me while gaming

  • like Razer, both KB+M lasted me for 5+ years before first ''details'' and just now (almost 7y) started failing noticeably

  • EDIT: I mainly play WoW, and generally, RPGs /MMORPGs. Occasionally, Shooters.

Important Note

  • I'm in Colombia and will have it internationally shipped, so I can't just buy and return if don't like it

PLUS Question

  • Is it worth getting the 'same' mouse again? My Razer Naga Chroma is failing, and I'm thinking on getting the Razer Naga X to replace it

Thanks everyone for your insight

Linear is better for gaming, clicky is better for typing. On a linear you might accidentally press some keys you didn’t mean to while typing since it’s so easy and there’s no bump to even let you know you just typed a letter in. On a clicky, the bumps can get annoying when trying to do really fast keypresses like let’s say strafing left and right in a shooter to avoid getting shot. So I’d say determine which is more important to you in the long run. Keep in mind if you’re mainly playing like RPG’s or single player games (or you don’t really care about being competitive) you don’t really need the advantage linear switches give you. Oh and also linear is silent while clicky is loud. If you’re unsure whether the loudness would bother you I’d recommend heading to a Best Buy or Walmart, they almost always have them on display to type on. Also I don’t know anything about the Naha or Naga x lol but if I had an old viper I would definitely upgrade to a newer viper, so I guess I would say upgrade

I prefer the purple switches on my Huntsman V2. The added noise might take a bit of getting used to at first but I find it to be more satisfying. The V2 Huntsman boards have a sound dampening foam that reduces SOME of the noise but not all of it. The V1 reds were indeed quite sensitive. I couldn't adjust to them even after using MX Speed switches for a couple years. I will say that they are fantastically smooth though. The V2s actually fix this somewhat and the foam helps by making them a bit "heavier" to press so they don't accidentally register as easily. For MMOs, I would say the added feedback from the purples is a boon because accuracy is a big deal. You don't want to hit the wrong hotkey and use the wrong ability accidentally for example. But really, it comes down to what you're more comfortable using. I play a wide variety of games including MMOs like WoW and FFXIV, FPS like Rainbow 6 Siege and Doom Eternal, and rhythm games like Muse Dash on my purple switches.
