hi, I am a fine art student getting into critical contemporary art theory.
I really want to read up about what's happening currently in the world as I only seem to come across theories and writings from over a decade ago in my studies. Since the recent ArtForum ongoings, I don't want to support huge publications discussing art which probably have a perspective on art as the art market with large ominous owners.
I am looking for recommendations of publications or websites that keep up-to-date essays, articles and writings about the art world, politics and all the other blah blah.
thank you!
No, I obviously don’t mean the TV show.
I’m an artist from a sound art/experimental music background originally, and always read UK magazine The Wire- it started in the 80s as a contemporary jazz magazine, and is now pretty much the leading English-language experimental music publication.
It’s very serious minded and absolutely not edgy/cool/aesthetic etc (although still v stylish in an understated way). It’s aimed at a specialist audience- a huge chunk of its audience are musicians themselves so it definitely skews towards that part of the audience.
I’m having difficulty finding contemporary arts magazines with a similar tone and feel. A lot of magazines feel very ‘coffee table’ and much more based around their visual aesthetic, aimed at an upper middle class audience who want to flaunt their good taste. Their theoretical insights are often shallow and pretentious, and absolutely not the sort of discussions that artists and curators are having in real life.
Just wondered if anyone could recommend a more down to earth, yet theoretically serious and absolutely not populist contemporary art publication?
