Ashley Furniture is low budget, low quality, and mass-produced furniture. A relative of mine purchased a very large Ashley sectional about 3 years ago (knowing nothing about US furniture), and one of the end seats compressed/collapsed from very moderate use. Thomasville, Broyhill, Raymour & Flanigan, Bob's Discount Furniture, or anything else that's in the same price range will be similar. New Flexsteel is also not BIFL, despite what other people believe; their new build quality (for the frames in particular) is lousy. Ethan Allen is also not as good as it was decades ago; I asked for the foam density in one of their sofas and it was very low. Higher quality USA-made sectionals (anything U-shaped, L-shaped, or with a chaise) are $10,000 new. This includes brands like Taylor King, Hancock and Moore, Vanguard, Sherrill Furniture, Century, or Stickley. Used Ethan Allen and Flexsteel sectionals/sofas from the 1990s and earlier should still be very good pieces in addition to the higher quality US brands mentioned above. The reason for Ashley's sink-in, plush, or comfy feel is because of low density foams and polyester batting (e.g., Dacron). The latter does not have any resiliency, so it compresses quite easily. Preventing premature cushion collapse requires either dense foam or an innerspring unit within the cushion. While foam density is not the same as a foam's firmness, there is a tendency for dense foams to feel firmer. Sufficiently strong Marshall coil units within a seat cushion last longer, but these tend to be quite firm with a stiffer "ride". Foam density is measured in pounds per cubic foot, but often listed as pounds. A foam's feeling of softness or firmness is usually given through Indentation Load Deflection (I.L.D.). A foam density of 2.4 lbs.-2.5 lbs. would be far better than 1.8 lbs. As for I.L.D., that will be subjective. If possible, you could ask Ashley Furniture the I.L.D. for the Lindyn sectional so you have an idea as to your preferences. And of course, it's entirely possible to have an upholsterer remove the old cushion media and replace with a denser foam. Businesses that sell upholstery foam are FoamOnline.com and FoamOrder.com. Neither Ashley nor La-Z-Boy are BIFL quality whatsoever. Avoid. Flexsteel, Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and West Elm aren't worth the money either. The higher quality made in USA brands are Kindel Grand Rapids, Taylor King, Hancock and Moore, Sherrill Furniture, Century Furniture, Vanguard Furniture, King Hickory, and Stickley. I don't know your budget. But from most showrooms, expect to pay around $5,800 for a 90"-94" wide stationary fabric sofa from the suggested brands. I scammed them! They delivered a couch to me at like 9PM (yes, I waited all day, I’ll give you that) - I went out the next morning to go to work and noticed they left their dolly in my front yard. So I called them up and said “you left your dolly in my front yard” the person on the phone said they’d have the drivers call me back, I said “they don’t need to call me back, just pick up the dolly.” A few days later I went on vacation for a week, came home to the dolly still in my front yard.
