Hello,
I have received my MB, CPU, PSU etc for my new build. I want to update the BIOS to the latest version 3.12 (according to the sticker I have 3.01) to have my 9800X3D working with it.
I downloaded both files and renamed one according to the HOW-TO.
I am using an old USB stick formatted in FAT-32 (I have tried 6 USB sticks in total). No CPU, no RAM, just Power and CPU cable from the PSU. When I plugged the USB stick, turn on the PSU and press Flashback button, it blinks and never stops. Any idea?
Thank you!

I recently received the B650I-Lightning for my first SFFPC. Will be using a 9800x3d for my build, which ASRock's website says needs at least bios version 3.01 to boot. The mb I received only has version 1.28 installed, however. I don't have another compatible CPU so I will have to use the flashback feature. I posted a picture of the flashback instructions ASRock posted for this board.
My question is: does it matter if I fully build my PC before I do the flashback, or should I only plug in exactly what the instructions tell me to and no more (i.e. no GPU or case fan connections) to do the flashback?
Sorry if this is a silly question; I'm relatively new to PC building and have never ran a bios flashback. Would rather be safe than sorry and not bust anything. Thanks
I recently tried to update my B650I Lightning Wifi to BIOS version 3.10 but upon reboot after the update, the PC wouldn't boot at all (Power button is on and fans are spinning etc. But nothing in the screen).
I attempted to clear CMOS but it didn't work so I tried doing USB flashback. I plugged in my USB (3.0) to the flashback port with the BIOS file renamed as CREATIVE.ROM, extracted to the root of the drive, but it won't read my USB drive. My flashdrive is in the FAT32 format and I double-checked with BOOTICE.
The Bootflash LED flashes then turns solid green indicating that the BIOS flashback isn't working.
Has anybody had any success with getting the B650I Lightning Wifi flashback to work? I've attempted unplugging everything but the CPU but it doesn't seem to help.
I was helping my friend build his first pc and had the firmware update stick plugged into the mobo by accident when we cut the power. It must have been running the update or something because now I can't get the system to even start the fans, let alone post, even though it was posting before.
I assume I corrupted the bios, but I can't get the flashback to work. So far I've tried:
1 usb 3.0 stick
2 usb 2.0 sticks (500mb and 32gb)
All are cleaned in diskpart, converted to mbr, and formatted to FAT32.
I'm following the reboot instructions to the letter: Rename update file to CREATIVE.ROM, put it in the root of the directory, plug in 12-pin, turn on PSU but NOT the motherboard, plug flash drive into marked usb port, hold flashback button for 3 seconds until it flashes green, wait 7 minutes, pull hair out of skull.
It's supposed to flash for about 5 minutes until it's done, but it just flashes indefinitely. The manual also doesn't explain how to reflash it in detail, so I'm just using the generic one from Asrock's site.
One of my usb sticks has a light that lets you know when it's reading/writing, and according to that light, the stick is not being read, even though the motherboard's light is flashing. The motherboard light flashes even if I try the whole process without a usb stick in it, so it's not a useful indicator. I've also tried most of the usb ports, because some other posts have said that their board was marked incorrectly.
I've also tried removing all the components and repeating the process.
This is so frustrating. Has anyone with this specific board done this successfully?
I just built a new PC. Here is the list of parts.

I noticed, that I need a specific BIOS version to be able to use my CPU. But I thought it aint gonna be that bad. But it is that bad. I put the whole PC together and tried to boot. It didnt boot at all. No video output over HDMI. None. So I took a 32GB USB Stick, formatted it to FAT32 via windows rightclick "format" option. I removed the CPU's power cable from the mainboard. Then I put the CREATIVE.ROM on it and plugged it into the port that had a blue border around it and hit the BIOS Flashback button for around 3 seconds. Nothing happened. I tried again a few times but no blinking light - no light at all. Then I removed the RAM and tried again. Nothing. I removed the CPU and SSD, still nothing. I created two more BIOS USB Sticks. one with 4GB storage and one with like 240MB. Still nothing. I re-formatted the USB Sticks via Rufus.

Still Nothing.
Well, today I tried powering up my new system for the first time. I have the following components:
-
B650i Lightning WiFi
-
AMD Ryzen 9 9900X
-
Silicon Power PC5 6000 ram (30-38-38-96), 2x32gb
-
Samsung 990 Pro 4TB m.2 SSD
-
temporary PSU: Coolermaster RS-400-PSAR-J3 (ATX12v, v2.3 w/o PFC... "400w" (lists 276w for 12V1 + 12V2). My real PSU (Asus Loki 850w) is arriving in 2 days. I also have a 4070TiS, but I'm not installing that until I have the new PSU because I know the current one almost certainly isn't good enough.
The board was open-box from Micro Center. I assume they make at least a minimal effort to test returned motherboards prior to putting them back on the shelf to make sure they at least POST.
When I power it up, the power LED blinks at 2hz and the CPU fan begins spinning for around 67 seconds... then it shuts off.
I tried clearing the BIOS to defaults (power off, unplug, jumper across BIOS clear for a few seconds). It didn't help.
I then tried using Flashback:
-
16gb USB2.0 flash drive
-
downloaded 3.10 BIOS from https://pg.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B650I%20Lightning%20WiFi/index.us.asp#BIOS , extracted to flash drive, renamed to PSPBIOS.IMG
-
downloaded Raphael/Granite Ridge BIOSUBU from same page, extracted to flash drive as BIOSUBU.BIN
-
turned off power, unplugged, plugged in, turned on power, inserted flash drive into HDMI port directly above the HDMI port (the one with a box drawn around it indicating that it's for flashback)
-
pressed and held Flashback button for ~4 seconds
-
The green LED on the rear began to flash, while the power LED on the case illuminated solidly and the CPU fan began to spin.
-
After approximately 70 seconds, the green LED on the rear stopped flashing, the power LED went off, and the CPU fan stopped spinning.
-
Waited for it to reboot. After around 10 minutes, I gave up.
-
Attempted to restart. Same behavior as before.
At no point have I gotten any video output whatsoever (though I know that's not itself necessarily indicative of a problem, since modern displays with HDMI are so aggressive about powering down at the slightest hint of inactivity).
Any ideas what the problem might be, or what to try next? The most consistent symptom seems to be the system powering down approximately 66-70 seconds after either pressing the power button or triggering Flashback.
Obviously, the present power supply is sub-optimal... but I think that if the problem were being caused by the power supply, the board's behavior would be a lot more random... and not be consistently shutting down almost exactly 66-68 seconds after powering it on (by toggling the power button, or triggering Flashback).
I am building my first SFF PC after years only using laptops and saw in pcpartpicker following warning:
Warning: The ASRock B650I Lightning Wifi Mini ITX AM5 Motherboard supports the AMD Ryzen 5 9600X 3.9 GHz 6-Core Processor with BIOS version 3.01. If the motherboard is using an older BIOS version, updating the BIOS will be necessary to support the CPU.
So, I guess the mainboard will most probably come with 3.01. I hope? This was released in 2024-05-14. If not: will it not boot at all? There's this BIOS flashback thingy, but as far as I understood it also needs a CPU, RAM and SSD. Can anyone reduce my fears of having ordered something wrong? :-) Thanks.
Hey guys,
I just purchased some new parts and I’m getting ready to build it once everything comes in. I just have a quick question about doing the BIOS update on the new motherboard, I purchased the ASRock B650I Lightning WiFi. When downloading the new BIOS update (2.02), I noticed that it states “*If you used the Instant Flash tool for the BIOS update, kindly enter the G3 (AC power off) state and power on again once the BIOS update is complete.”
I’m assuming after the update is complete the PC is going to restart itself but I’ll have a fresh SSD with nothing on it. Do I just boot back into the BIOS and then shut the PC down by holding the power button? Should I not update the BIOS until I have Windows installed? Should I try the Flashback method instead of Instant Flash?
I’m sorry if these are dumb questions, I’m probably overthinking all of this. I’d appreciate some help!
Hey Guys,
Trying to decide which Mobo to go on my ITX build.
Have whittled it down to these two, The only thing I'm trying to work out is whether its worth going with the ASUS board with the bios flash back function for the ease of dropping in a newer CPU down the track, similar to what AM4 had (Albeit with ASUS's worse memory stability at current for AM5 boards).
Or go for the Asrock board & forgo the bios flashback feature (7950X3D is listed on the compatible CPU's list so should work straight out of the box) which doesn't seem to have any reports of memory stability issues.
Pricewise there's only about $50 between the two so that isn't a massive deciding factor.
For extra info the build is:
-CPU - AMD 7950X3D
-RAM - G.Skill tridents z5 neo 64GB
-GPU - MSI RTX4090 Suprim X
-Primary storage - Samsung 990 Pro 2TB
-Game storage - XPG Gammix S70 Blade 2TB
-Case - Cooler master NR200P Max
-Power supply - Cooler master V850 SFX GOLD
-AIO - included Cooler master 280mm with the NR200P Max
Thanks guys!
