Shutdown issue: Q-Code 04 - ROG Forum - ASUS
March 6, 2024 - The temperature rises from 44 degrees or so (visible on the OC panel) to somewhere in the low 50's and the system hangs. It never shuts down. Every time it experiences a 10 degree temperature increase and hangs at a black screen until I manually power down the machine by holding the front power button for 5 seconds. The Q-Code is typically 04, although I have seen an 03 Q-Code.

Hero VIII q code 04 - Republic of Gamers Forum - 638954
March 6, 2024 - Looks like the last code it gets to before hanging with 04 is 72. PCH devices initialization ... Thank you Download the latest bios from the Asus support Center and extract it to a usb flashdrive formatted to FAT 32, rename the bios file to M8H.CAP then insert it into the bios flashback port, press and hold the bios flashback button until it starts to flash, it should get faster as it goes then stop, it should take about 90 seconds to flash.

Troubleshooting Help:

Parts list

  • i7-7700k

  • ASUS Maximus IX Code

  • EVGA GTX 1080 SC

  • Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB 3200MHz

  • Corsair 750HX PSU

  • Corsair H110i AIO Cooler

  • 2 x 500GB Samsung SSDs in RAID0

  • ASUS Xonar Xense PCIe Audio Card / Headphone Amp

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

  • When I shut down my PC, or restart my PC, my Motherboard hangs up on Q-Code 04

  • Code meaning: PCH initialization after microcode loading

  • It will sit there for hours if I let it, and won't shut down.

  • It logs out of windows, shuts off my monitors (no video signal) but the lights stay on, and all the fans keep spinning, pump still pumps, etc.. but will not completely shut down

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I had Cable Mod braided PSU extensions installed, I removed those, and it seemed to go away for a day, but now it's doing it again. Returned the extensions anyways.

I have tried disabling "fast boot" in bios, as I read someone suggested to do that in a prior model motherboard.

I tried moving my RAM to different slots.

I tried buying new RAM thinking the DIMMs may be faulty somehow.

I have disabled nearly everything in PCH that BIOS settings that I don't use.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Anything else

This is a brand new build, 7 days old. I have never had this much trouble with a build before. The CPU is not Overclocked, but the RAM is set to XMP.

March 7, 2024 - So, rig completely rebuilt, I power it up and exactly the same random errors, from D5, O4 test nvram, Install gpu bios *and check cpu errors, I have flashed the bios, cleared the bios so many times, so I just continued rebooting in the hope it would settle eventually ( sometimes it does) and yes it settled on ‘04 test nvram’ *which according to the manual is “ pch initialisation before microcode loading” O4 is now a permanent boot fail , which, at this minute I don’t have a clue how to rectify???
