If you had to decide between these two, which one would you pick, and why?
I’m torn between the two for my next small form factor build. What would you recommend?

I was planning to go for a 3900xt + x570i or a b550i for my itx build.
Here is some question:
1, What is the point of new b550i since it is very similar to x570i's configs. They all got 2 M.2, similar IOs, VRM, even that annoying little fan...
2, B550i is not actually fundamentally cheaper than Gigabytes' X570i, so is there any reason I should still choose B550i?
3, I don't see B550i could support zen4 because it is still using AM4, so it basically has the same lifespan as X570i boards...
I am confused now should I go for new B550i or stick to X570i. Also, I was kind of worried about BIOS compatibility issues. We know that there could be something wrong with AMD's BIOS... until thet release a hotfix...
After reading about ITX boards I left wondering for the safest bet for the smøl Dan A4. Here's an alphabetical table I made after researching all the boards, help me fill it! If you could post stuff about clearance, problems, specs and performance differences. Sources would be appreciated. Other good comparison I found.
| Board | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Pros for B550i over X570i | ○ -80$, ○ USB 3.2 Gen 2 front panel connector, ○ Stronger VRM, ○ Better fit for Dan A4/ITX, ○ Newer release | ○ Marginally worse power delivery, ○ Slower but not noticeable?, ○ Worse VRM thermals, ○ PCIe 4.0 enough for only one GPU and one SSD (are points 2 and 3 outdated? The PCIe 4.0 thread has a good explanation for anyone as confused as I) ○ Can't update BIOS without CPU |
| ASRock B550M-ITX/ac | ○ -50$ | ○ Crap design and limited connectivity, ○ VRM 6+2 50A, ○ No USB 3.2 Gen 2 front panel connector, ○ Single M.2 slot ○ No Wifi 6 (802.11ax) ○ Can't update BIOS without CPU, problem with new CPUs |
| ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ax | ○ VRM 6+2 90A power stages | ○ +30$, ○ No VRM fan, but not a problem?, ○ 90° SATA connectors, that need to be rerouted for Dan A4, ○ Can't update BIOS without CPU |
| Asus ROG Strix B550-I | ○ Generally recommended as best (1, 2...) and many successful builds (google "your case + MB") | ○ +30$, ○ VRM 8+2 50A power stages, ○ Limited fan curve, ○ Bad updating and BIOS ○ Info on their website insufficient |
| Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro AX | ○ VRM 6+2 90A power stages | ○ Messy BIOS said many: check video, ○ BIOS resetting for some ○ No front panel USD 3.2 Gen 2 |
| MSI MPG B550I Gaming Edge | ○ Fast updating and support, ○ Clean BIOS, ○ Uses Realtek LAN chip, so no Intel Ethernet issues | ○ VRM 8+2 60A power stages, ○ The stock CPU cooler backplate mount is ass and you might need to ask custom one, ○ Chipset fan is on the way?, ○ Info on their website insufficient |
Personally, I'm leaning towards ASRock Phantom for my Dan A4 V4.1 build, but depending on CPU or case you might not care about VRM or space issues.
For You Information:
○ There's some old info floating around B550i not having PCIe 4.0. This is not true.
○ If number of M.2 slots is important for you, read the thread about it below and check your MB specs
○ X570 boards and some B550 do not support 4th gen Ryzen 5000s out of the box, so better check when buying or wait for a new MB like X590. Unless you can update it yourself with an older CPU or with the BIOS update USB slot.
○ Can't update BIOS without CPU? AMD might help you out: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-105#faq-Short-Term-Processor-Loan-Boot-Kit
My current build plan is below comments are more than welcome!
| Part | Part (click for cheapest store in EU store on 8.11.2020) | Price (rounded €) | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case | DAN A4-SFX V4.1 | 214 | Hopefully lasts for 10 years |
| Motherboard | On hold | I'll get MB after 6800 | |
| PSU | Corsair SF750 | 155 | Duh! |
| CPU | AMD Ryzen 5 5600X | 320 | Smart Access Memory |
| CPU cooling | Asetek AiO 645LT 92mm with Noctua NF-A9x14 | 94 | Better cooling than Black Ridge(?) and I want a challenge! |
| GPU | AMD Radeon RX 6800 | 520 (estimate) | Smart Access Memory |
| RAM | Ballistix 32GB Kit DDR4 2x16GB 3600 CL16 | 160 | Thanks to abqnm666 for info on c-die vs b-die |
| SSD | 1000GB Crucial P1 NVMe M.2 2280 | 92 | Cheap for 1TB |
| Fans | 2x Noctua NF-A9x14 | 33 | Noctua bes |
| Other | USB to MB part 1 and part 2 | 14 | IF I need to plug stuff to front USB 3.1 and no 3.2 on MB |
It is kind of a bad time to build a computer, but unfortunately I can't wait for 6 months until price drop and new MBs/AMD AM5 to come out.
EDIT: Changed my preference from Gigabyte to ASRock Phantom
All the recent reviews say to skip x570 and go for b550 because it's cheaper and has most of what x570 offers.
In the UK right now the Strix b550i is 224 GBP and the gigabyte x570i is 150 GBP. Both have wifi and BT.
It seems like a no brainer to go for the x570 if it's cheaper, but am I missing something? Is there any reason to prefer the b550i?
I've never used either brand so I have no preference for either
Hey!
I recently posted about a build i've been planning around my TITAN RTX (Post & Details Here)
I went for the ASRock X570-I, mostly for the TB3 compatibility, that would play well with my 4K Thunderbolt Monitor I got from work. Components are all on the and I should receive them tomorrow.
I've been doing a bit more research since, and as the title suggest I've been having some level of buyers remorse towards the ASRock X570-I.
-
The BIOS needs to be updated for use my 5950X. I assumed the BIOS could be updated through their "Instant Flash" Technology, but when looking closer, the tutorial shows it requieres getting into the BIOS which would be impossible without a Zen2 CPU in the first place, unlike the full size X570 that has a dedicated "Instant Flash" physical button, or the Asus B550 that also has a dedicated "Flash Back" physical button.
-
The Layout is apparently pretty problematic for some user when trying to connect the CPU Pump Block, and the mounts are a bit odd.
-
There is only one NVME on the back and the board does not have a heat sink for it, although I'm aware you can buy copper plates for it.
-
Fan is apparently pretty noisy / whiny.
-
Wifi Antenna are very close appart and make it hard to use bunny ear antenna's in the back
-
I've overall read poor rating and comments on different plateforms.
On the other hand, the Asus B550-I comes with less features and IO, but solves most of the issues I see.
-
Easy to update BIOS
-
More forgiving layout
-
Heatsink for NVME
-
Wide antenna
-
Passive cooling
-
Well reviewed
Other than the TB3, I don't believe I would be missing on anything... I can deal with having to use Display Port instead.
Am I overthinking this? Am I completely missing something here? Obviously if I need to make the switch it would be easy as I have not put the build together yet and could simply return the ASRock unopened.
Thank you for any help.
I compared both and went with the B550I from asus. 2 m2 slots, usb c con metro, and slightly cheaper than the x570. Hopefully you bought it from a retailer that allows returns.
I have the X570-I, and just took my build apart today to stick a 5600G in it.
Obviously it has TB3, which gives you all the flexibility you're after.
The only 'real' problem I see here is updating the BIOS to support the 5950X. Assuming you get around that issue, everything else seems pretty minor.
So I am choosing mobos for my nr200 build and atm x570 is 50 dollars cheaper than b550i(thanks scalpers), also I thought of buying asus x570i but now its 320$(double thanks scalpers). So I am stuck in between, pls help)
Edit 1: I value quality of life features, shit ton of ports is a must and just a solid mobo, 4 fans am gonna use pwn hub so idc about them, am gonna use 3600mhz ram, I am gonna get 5600x or 5900x (depends on which Ill lay my hands first), but pls take the 12core as a more likely choice and just wanna a solid board no cares about designs and rgb, cause I int seeing it anyway
What would be the difference between these two motherboards, pairing it with a r7 3700x. Can't decide which one help!
I just finished a build in the nr200 for which I chose the aorus x570i because I have a 5900x, 6900xt and a pcie 4.0 ssd. As others have reported the pch fan kinda annoys me, even at silent. The m.2 ssd gets hot constantly and so the fan spins regularly. Admittedly the cooling setup is not optimal, I am planning on replacing my 240mm aio with a scythe fuma 2 for better airflow throughout the case. I was thinking that I might as well change the motherboard since I could still return it.
Any opinions on why in this case the aorus x570si (which also has no fan) would be better/worse than the aorus b550i? Should I replace at all? Not considering Asus's b550i because of how rear i/o there is.
I'm having a bit of a dilemma. I really like the B550i board from Gigabyte, has all the features i need but it has a buggy Realtek LAN chip that a lot of people seem to have issues with.
So I was thinking of getting the Asus X570i instead but it costs $80 more and doesn't look like it provides anything worth that money. It does have an Intel LAN chip which should not cause any issues but it doesn't look as high quality as the Gigabyte.
I read that Asus has a better BIOS and is more reliable in terms of updates but I have no way of verifying that.
Which would you chose?
Note on LAN, it's a Realtek issue, not a BIOS or Gigabyte one.
This came out today...Update on RTL8125 - Realtek has identified an issue with flow control pause packets, which could cause LAN disruptions and outages, and will be fixed in in next driver version(v10.048). Additionally, they are reviewing the driver code related to Interrupt moderation and Large Send Offload, both of which have proved problematic in testing. In the meantime, your best bet is to use the latest RTL driver and disable
flow control
interrupt moderation
Large Send Offload IPv4
Large Send Offload IPv6
Side note, I have had the GB B550i running since Sept. and have not had any LAN or USB issues. Had the BT issue but only 2x and I have since solved it months ago and posted it's fix.
I own both and have had zero problems with either. I actually got the B550i later because not having a chipset fan is one less mechanical part to fail, so for the price wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Gigabyte.
Hi all,
Just wondering what people would choose. Reason is I can either get a gigabyte b550i for $349 aud locally or a gigabyte x570i for $357 aud on amazon.
I have preordered the x570i but can cancel anytime as amazon doesn't charge till it is shipped which is in September. Stock for the b550i is hard to get as it is OOS everywhere.
End of the day, if I see stock for the b550i should I just buy it or wait till September and get the x570i. I am not in a rush and can wait till September.
Thanks
Update: Thanks for the input guys. Amazon now has a preorder for the asrock b550i phantom for $320 aud, so that looks like the board I will go with.
The main difference in the two chipsets is that there are more pcie 4.0 lanes on the x570. But a itx board actually doesn’t not have enough expansion to use those extra lanes. Basically you have 4.0 lanes for your video card, usb, m.2 that come off your CPU and that’s enough to cover most of the expansion in a itx board. The only real world difference might be the second m.2 slot in a itx board might be 3.0 speed on a b550 vs a full 4.0 on a x570. So this was a long way of saying all things being equal like VRM and cooling get the x570, if not then it’s really how much you value the extra 4.0 lanes.
I just went B550I over X570I, the cost of these ITX boards is already so high IMO. It was about a $60cad price difference, you really do not give up much by going one over the other though.

Hello guys - I'm between these two motherboards (see title) for my sff build. The build will entirely be used for personal use and video editing (going to be paired with a 5900X and 3070). I can pick up either at nearly the same cost ($230). Does it make sense to go X570 if I can for the same price? I'm interested in the potentially better IO speeds with the X570 but was wondering if there are concerns about Gigabyte as I've seen some people have issues. Thanks in advance.
Gigabyte's b550i 🙃
-
No chipset fan
-
Better VRMs than the strix
-
Cheaper
-
Standard backplate
-
Straight sata ports If you really want to get a ROG MB get the x570i as it's the best. It's more expensive ofc.
So far so good on my x570i, no issues out of the box and q flash for bios update just worked on first try so that was nice
Edit: Actually that might be something for you to consider. If the motherboard does not come with the up to date bios already installed for Zen 3, you'll need to flash new bios on it. The gigabyte has the q flash feature so you can update from a usb but if the asus board doesn't have this feature you'll need a cpu installed to update the bios before installing a Zen 3 cpu.
I don't know which to pick because their specs are so similar. I planning to put in a ryzen 9 5800x with a aio connected. I also have some Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16GB ram sticks if that helps you guys know which is best for me
Jag planerar att bygga med en Ryzen 5950x + x570i eller en b550i.
Vilket moderkort skulle vara bättre mellan Asus Rog Strix X570i och Gigabyte B550i Aorus Pro AX?
Tack
