r/pcmasterrace on Reddit: Dark Hero 00 error
October 7, 2021 -

Hi together,

I was playing For Honor and watching some movie on Netflix. Then I went afk for about 5 minutes. When I came back I had a blackscreen and my mainboard showed the error code 00 so I looked it up on the manual and it says "not used". That doesn't help me at all. Can anyone explain to me what code 00 means? And what I can do to prevent it?

Rig: Ryzen 9 5950x Asus Dark Hero Mainboard x570 Msi 3070 ti suprim 32gb g.skill trident Z neo ram 3600mhz CL16 850w Titanium psu corsair Asus Ryujin 360 AiO

Thanks in advance ☺

Corrupted data is perpetuated by CMOS battery – Under certain circumstances, you can expect to see this error code if your CMOS battery is ‘remembering’ corrupted boot data in between restarts. To fix this problem, you need to take out the CMOS battery in order to drain the power capacitors of your motherboard. BIOS or UEFI data is causing instability – As it turns out, there are certain BIOS or UEFI settings that might cause this type of motherboard error. Sometimes this can be resolved by resetting your BIOS or UEFI setting back to their factory defaults. RAM inconsistency – According to some affected users, this problem can sometimes be caused by your RAM sticks if you’re using a dual-channel setup. If this scenario is applicable, swapping the slots in which the 2 sticks are inserted might fix the issue in your case. Instable Overclocking – If you overclocked the frequencies and voltages of your CPU, GPU or RAM, you can also expect this motherboard error to occur due to general system instability. In this case, you should reset your overclocked values back to their defaults and see if the issue is now fixed. Method 1: Resetting the CMOS Battery (if applicable) As it turns out, one of the most common reasons that might be causing the 00 Q error code is an inconsistency that’s perpetuated by the CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) battery. In most cases, this particular ASUS Q error is caused by some type of corrupted data that’s preserved in-between startups and needs to be cleared. If this scenario looks like it could be applicable, you can fix the problem by opening your PC case and temporarily removing the CMOS battery in order to clear any information that might be causing this error at every startup attempt. In case you don’t know how to clear the CMOS battery by yourself, follow the instructions below for step by step instructions: Note: The instructions below are mostly applicable to desktop PCs. Although it’s possible to remove the CMOS battery on your laptop, this most likely involves breaking apart the whole thing which is considerably more complicated than just removing the case. Start by turning your computer and unplug it from the power source it’s currently connected to. Next, remove the side case on your PC a equip yourself with a static wristband before touching any of the internals. Note: A wristband is optional but recommended since it will ground you to the frame and eliminate the risks of causing shorts due to static electricity by evening out the electrical energy propagated throughout your PC components. Once you’ve made sure that you’re using the proper safety precautions, take a look at your ASUS motherboard and locate your CMOS battery. It’s easy to recognize as it’s basically the same kind of battery you’ll find on analog watches. When you see it, use your fingernail or a non-conductive object to remove it from the slot. Removing the CMOS battery Once you manage to remove the battery, wait for 10 seconds or more to give your motherboard enough time to drain the power capacitors and ‘forget’ the information that was previously stored by the CMOS battery. Next, reinsert the CMOS battery back into its slot and put the side cover back before plugging your computer back into a power source. Boot your computer normally and see if the problem is now fixed. In case the same problem is still occurring, move down to the next potential fix below. Method 2: Resetting BIOS / UEFI Settings (if applicable) If removing the CMOS battery didn’t fix the problem and you have access to your BIOS or UEFI, you might be able to fix the problem by resetting your UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) or BIOS (Basic Input / Output System) settings. If this problem is indeed related to a UEFI or BIOS setting, resetting everything back to their default values will fix the issue (as confirmed by a lot of affected users). IMPORTANT: You can only follow the instructions below if you get a signal to your monitor and you are able to access your BIOS or UEFI settings. But keep in mind that depending on the low-level type of software that you’re using, the instructions for resetting those settings will be different. To treat both potential scenarios, follow one of the sub-guides below: A. Resetting the UEFI Settings to Factory If you can’t boot up at all, you can force your PC to boot into the Recovery menu by forcing 3 consecutive startups interruptions – Do so by turning off your PC while it’s booting up. Once you’re inside the Recovery menu, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced, then click on UEFI Firmware Settings. Accessing the UEFI firmware settings Next, click on the Restart button to confirm your choice and wait until your computer will restart directly into the UEFI menu. Restarting the computer directly into the UEFI Setup After your computer boots directly into the UEFI settings, look around the settings, and look for the Restore / Reset tab and look for the Restore Defaults option. Restore UEFI settings to the defaults Note: Depending on your UEFI version and motherboard manufacturer, the exact names of these menus will be different. At the confirmation prompt, confirm the factory reset and restart your computer conventionally to see if the problem is fixed. B. Resetting BIOS Settings to Factory Power up your PC and start repeatedly pressing the Boot key (Setup key) immediately after you see the first screen. This should eventually take you directly into your BIOS screen. Note: In most cases, the Boot (Setup Key) is one of the following keys: Del key (Dell Computers), the Esc key, or one of the F keys (F1, F2, F4, F8, F12). Once you’re inside your BIOS settings, look for the menu named Setup Default or Reset to Default or Factory Default. Next, access the Load Setup Defaults option to refer back to their default values. Load default system configuration Save the changes, then restart your computer conventionally and see if the problem is now fixed. In case the same problem is still not resolved, move down to the next potential fix below. Method 3: Swapping your RAM Sticks As it turns out, some affected users have managed to fix the problem simply by swapping up their RAM sticks with each other before booting the computer again. This method was confirmed to be effective for a lot of affected users – All they did was they powered off their computer and opened the PC case to change the slots in which their dual channel RAM sticks were inserted. Check your RAM sticks Swapping your RAM sticks Once you swap the RAM sticks slots, boot your computer normally and see if the problem is now resolved. If the same problem is still occurring, move down to the next potential fix below. Method 4: Removing Overclocked Frequencies If you’re currently overclocking your the frequencies and/or voltages of your RAM, CPU, or GPU, that might be the main cause of this error code. Most likely, you’re seeing this motherboard error code due to general system instability. In case this scenario looks like it could be applicable and you’re seeing this error after overclocking certain components on your PC configuration, go ahead and revert back to the default values before booting up again and see if the problem is fixed.

I think all of Mobo manufacturers use 00 to show "CPU failure". Well, Atleast MSi and Asus does that.

I would tune PBO or CO, Problem should be fixed. Also CO generally make crashes on idle.

Hi

It's the second time this week I have a sudden crash of my pc with a qcode 00. Screen goes black and fans are at 100%, i have to turn it off on the psu

The pc boots normally when I restart it but I'm worried something is actually failing, I read a code asus might be cpu, psu or motherboard related and I have absolutely no mean to test anything with another mb or cpu.

At first I thought it might be power plan related since I've tried to but the minimum cpu state at a lower % but it just did it again when I was playing a game.

The board is a dark hero crosshair VIII, cpu amd 5900x

I was using the same setting for two years without issues, oc with pbo and curve optimiser. I've just reset the oc settings to run it stock to see if it was the issue but it happens two times at a very different qxe atop one time I was just working on excel, second time when I was gaming.

Thanks for the help

December 10, 2022 -

Hi,

I need some help with code 00 (I see there is some post on asus website but Im not able to open it cause long time maintenance on their side). From time to time my pc either during gaming or even searching the web or being in windows stops responding. Monitor is going down hoverver all other components like fans, pump, LED work. Im not able to use restart button and even start button, it does not do anything. I have to switch off the power on PSU and then start computer again. Asus montherboard is giving me code 00 with orange LED beneath the code. I changed the ram, added 4pin power for CPU, a reset BIOS through batter and had this issue today after 4 days of running PC without any problem

Other components:

CPU - 5800x3d

GPU - 3080Ti

PSU - Corsair 750x

RAM - Gskill 2x16 DDR4 3600 CL16 (I had Corsair 4x8GB 3000 and had the same issue so it cannot be ram problem)

What could be the issue? I read a few other posts and people say CPU, GPU ora MB

Thank for your help!

r/ASUS on Reddit: Dark Hero with 5800X getting random 00 QCode freezes
January 19, 2022 -

I am at the latest Bios plus latest AMD chipset drivers from the ASUS site. I have googled this endlessly and the only 'fixes' I have seen are disabling Global CStates and setting CPU Idle to Typical, both of which I have done. I also added a plus 0.05 volt offset on the CPU voltage (just trying this last one but not real confident it's going to work). I am running XMP to set my memory at it's requested 3600 speed and 1.35 volts.

It has never froze under load, works like a champ, it's when near idle when I am doing random little things that it will freeze. Almost always it shows 00 in the QCode but always requires a power off.

I am considering paying up for a 5900X to try and solve this but then I am throwing away what I paid for the 5800X.

Anyone else seeing these issues? Any fixes that work?

EDIT: I think the setting below might have been causing my issues:

The correct value for 5 series is 5%, NOT 0%.

Hi there. I'm chiming in because I seem to have a similar experience with the Dark Hero and a 5900X. I previously had the Crosshair VIII Hero and had no issues like this. Since "upgrading" to the Dark Hero, it seems I've had issues randomly where I go to use it after sitting overnight and the system is frozen with no video output. I first thought it was having to do with some incompatibility with Windows 11 (I both switched to Windows 11 and upgraded to the Dark Hero around the same time so it was misleading), so I went back to Windows 10. I just experienced the same thing however. All of these are clean installs. I've replaced the video card, and storage. I've read trying to disable C states or upping DRAM voltage to 1.4 could be a workaround, but I'm unsure why I need to do this. My DRAM is G.SKILL F4-3600C16Q-32GTZRC and I'm running it with the DOCP profile at 3600MHz CL16-19-19-39 (as defined by G.SKILL) and I believe 1.35v. I think this kit is also on the compatibility list for the Dark Hero. My next steps were trying to either up the DRAM voltage to 1.4v, or drop back to 3200MHz temporarily and possibly run memtest86 overnight. The most annoying part is the issue isn't consistent. Sometimes it won't happen for a few days. Other times it might happen more than once a day. I'm wondering if you found anything else. I started researching this and may post on Asus's forums as well.

Hi I had a random shurdo with Q code 00 this morning and it happens that I've set the cpu utilisation to 0 instead of 90% of the power plan I'm using some custom one (ryzenszv4). Never hard issue with it before but I've seen it was putting the cpu usage on to 90% and I thought that was useless. I've put it back to 5%.did I fixed the issue for you?

So my recently new PC has gone through several months without issues until this past afternoon, when upon boot, I got an "American Megatrends" screen saying that it didn't detect my keyboard & mouse, and stated that "VGA card is not supported by UEFI".

My PC is running with Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero, Ryzen 9 5900x, ASUS TUF Gaming RTX 3080, Seasonic Plus 1000W 80+ Gold PSU, and the MSI MAG274QRF-QD monitor.

What's strange is that it detected and recognized all 6 of my internal drives ( 2 NVMe, 2 SSDs, 2 HDDs). I don't know what could've caused this issue. I tried switching keyboards, reseating GPU, reinserting memory sticks, draining the CMOS battery ( remove and wait for 5 mins), reapplied thermal paste to CPU, and do BIOS flashback, none of which solved the issue. I can't even get into configuring the BIOS itself since the keyboard doesn't function.

I'm at a loss as to what to do, especially since this PC is not even a year old. Does anyone have any advice or ideas to help me on this?

Update: Well, my relief was short-lived. Stopped by my home to turn on my PC, and the SAME ISSUE comes up all over again!! Even worse, the Q-LED shows a white light (VGA) under the q code "A0" for a good minute, and then the green light (boot) follows, showing a q code of "02" again. How this happened is beyond me, but I tried using my HDMI cable from my laptop to my monitor, and the HDMI cable works fine. I tried using a replacement Displayport cable from my PC to my monitor to no avail. Then tried placing my GPU on the 2nd PCIe slot, only that it still showed the same errors. I don't know guys, I fear this is looking like a RMA, but I don't even know if it's the CPU, GPU, motherboard that would need replacing. (All of these are still under warranty, fyi.) Any one know other methods that might work?

Hallelujah, my PC came back to life! So I don't know if there was a weird issue with the memory sticks or the HDMI/Displayport cables/ports, but when I fiddled around with reseating the RAM sticks, I found that the 1st slot initially was not showing RGB lighting. So I figured I'd give it and other RAM sticks a quick clean by using small alcohol cleaning wipes to gently wipe the contacts. After doing that, I moved the video cables to other ports. Once I started the PC, Eureka - keyboard lights came up, all memory sticks were lighting up, and the computer passed the BIOS screen right to the Windows login screen. I was immensely relieved to see this. The only minor issue I came across is that the my mouse dongle that was connected to the front USB 3.0 port (on be quite Pure Base 500DX) is not working. But when I moved it the rear I/I, it works.

July 19, 2022 - This memory is also not on the QVL (although Gskill had it on their QVL, Asus does not), but from what I understand this doesn't really matter once you go outside D.O.C.P/XMP anyway. My issue is a random hard-freeze that occurs under completely random scenarios, and seems to be a total crash of the mainboard management controller itself - the crash is so bad that even the reset and power buttons do not function, and the 1 fan controlled by the mainboard goes to max speed. QCODE is usually 00 or 02 and the MEM LED is solid orange.
