I have been going down the rabbit hole of getting my new PC up and running. I have managed to install Windows 11 and have it running for a few days, but I am constantly running into problems with random lock ups and video just disappearing and having to reboot. I am thinking I am missing a BIOS setting or two to get my rig stable enough to do some work on it (3d modeling, etc). Wondering if another ASUS owner has been down this road with a similar config since its a reco from pcpartpicker.
I have the following config:
-
ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero
-
i9-14900K
-
G.SKILL Trident Z5 RGB Series (Intel XMP 3.0) DDR5 RAM 64GB F5-6400J3239G32GX2-TZ5RK
-
ASUS Dual GeForce RTX™ 4070 Super EVO OC Edition 12GB GDDR6X
In the BIOS I have gone back and forth between the Intel Performance and the Intel Extreme profiles, but both still have variations of instability. I tried changing DRAM timings, but all of the DDR5 settings other than Auto failed to boot into Windows.

I recently built my new gaming PC and I currently have an Intel I7 13700kf paired with a Asus 4090 gaming OC. I have old parts from my previous build that somebody wants to purchase and they would like to buy my CPU from this build. On the box and online I can guarantee it supports 13th and 12th Gen Intel because I was going to upgrade to a 13 900 KS. But on Newegg it shows in the description it supports 14th and some places say it does support 14th but I can’t find anything with actual hard evidence so if anybody has some information on this, it would be greatly appreciated so I can make my decision of whether or not to buy a 13th I-9 or a 14th I-9. THANKS!
I have recently been trying to buy and build a completely new gaming pc. Here are the following specs:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/yV8P7R
I am almost complete with the build, as all I need now is just the motherboard, the case, and the RAM. In terms of the case and the RAM I am 100% certain that I want the ones selected on the pc part picker list, but the motherboard is where I become uncertain. The motherboard featured within the list, the ASUS ROG MAXIMUS HERO, was the motherboard I chose over the only other motherboard I was considering, which was the ASUS Strix Z790-E II. Between those two I found the Hero to be the better and more performance-providing option, but there is a slight issue I am concerned about. I have a Intel i9 14th gen cpu, and according to ASUS the older boards, such as the Hero, need to undergo a BIOS update in order for them to be compatible with 14th gen cpus. The two main concerns that I would like alleviated are the following:
-
Did I make the right decision in choosing the ASUS Maximus Hero over the ASUS Strix Z790-E II?
-
If I do end up buying the Hero motherboard will I be able to put it together with the i9 14900? Like when will I be able to do the BIOS update, before or after I put together my cpu with my motherboard. If it is after I put together my pc, will I even be able to turn on my PC to administer the BIOS update?
