does anyone know where the cmos is located on this motherboard and what I need to remove to get at it so I can reset it cheers

It is located underneath the VRM heat sink block plastic. There are two pins you can short to achieve a similar but less drastic effect. Hope that works. Otherwise you have to remove the mother board from the case and half dismantle the board to get at the battery. Truly stupid design from Asus imho.

You dont need to remove anything. There are two pins that you need to short while the PC is shut off to clear the CMOS. You will find them labled in the manual. Edit: Page 23

I ordered some 2-pin buttons to connect to the clear CMOS pins, but was wondering if there is a fast way or automatic way to clear the CMOS on an unsuccessful boot? I'm using an NCase M1 and reaching pins buried in the case requires me to take almost the whole computer apart. Is there any quick way for an unsuccessful boot to auto-clear the CMOS and boot into default settings? I've looked but haven't found anything. The button will definitely do the trick, but I am just looking for a faster way atm. Thank you

That's probably the only way. If there's not a button on the back already, your only other option is the jumper pins. Not mentioning battery removal because that's an even bigger pain. If your case has a "reset" switch to hard-restart on the front panel you could use that temporarily.

Before my Maximus VIII Hero started consistently booting bios in safe mode after an unsuccessful OC, I found that removing a stick of ram would force it to boot bios in safe mode. This might hopefully be easier than your current solution until the buttons arrive.

After fiddling with some memory timings, mine got bricked. I was previously able to reset using the jumpers but not this time.

The cmos battery is under vrm metal shroud, how do I get to it?

You don't by chance have another compatible AM4 CPU, do you? If you pop it in, it will force the board to reset entirely, loading defaults. I got myself into the same bind, where the clear CMOS didn't work from getting a little too edgy with RAM OC. And it was just easier to first try an old cpu that caused it to reset, as I really didn't want to have to take it apart. If you have to get to the battery, on the back, there are 4 screws through the backplate that hold the VRM shield on. Be careful of the fan cable, it might be wise to unplug it first so you're not tethered when you unscrew it. Then it just lifts off. Be careful not to damage the thermal pads, but they're not the super fragile kind, so they're not that sensitive. Then you can unplug the battery, and reverse the process. Be very careful not to pinch the fan cable under the VRM cover (Asus did this to me from the factory, and my board is out waiting for an RMA right now because it eventually shorted out, taking my board, PSU & GPU with it).

Hello, I have a picture how to get to the battery connector without removing the motherboard. I had to disconnect and reconnect the battery because jumpers did not do the trick for bios reset. Remove cpu cooler. The cable is accessible for disconnecting. (Green arrow) No need to remove the cover of vmr heatsink. Yes my mobo is upside down.

I think I have to take out the shroud in the 1st pic but I don't know how. Do I need some special tool? Or do I have to take out the Wifi antena to reach the CMOS?

Also will any local CR2032 wired cmos will do thr job or should I look for some specific brand?

Final Update : After removing the back plate from motherboard in the 3rd pic I am able to remove the shroud in the 1st pic. It was just that I was being to careful so I didn't notice that it was ready to come off. After that everything was easy. As for cmos battery, I didn't have any wired one available and the ones in nearby stores will definitely won't have a branded company product. It is not even available in Amazon. So I just cut the tape of the one which came with the motherboard, detached the wires along with the thin metal plate(these plates are soldered to the battery). Afer that I picked up a duracell battery and fixed the wires tightly with plenty of cello tape. The pc is running fine and bios settings are also working well. The date/time on pc is also correct. I restarted and also fully switched off and on the pc and the bios settings didn't change. So the cmos battery seems to be working as intended. Will update if anything goes wrong in the following days.

For all the advancement they done on itx this wired cmos battery gotta be one of the most ass backwards implementation the manufacturer done . My asrock x570 has the same thing . there should be a jumper on the motherboard which can be set > power on > set the jumper back > power on. the motherboard manual will tell you where the bios clear jumper is

edit: makesure you power off the machine before changing the jumper

or easiest and lazy way would be to remove the power form the machine then remove the CMOS (silver coin) battery. press the power button, the fans will probably spin for a second, this should clear your bios.

reconnect the battery and power and power on as normal and make any changes you need to your bios

Have you tried shorting the cmos jumper? 11 on the layouts motherboard page.

Shorting the jumper as has been said should work. If not there is a compatibility option you need to turn on. Sorry, can't remember where it is. I had the same thing happen to me.
