Should I use Audacity?
People freaked out after Audacity was acquired and then released a verry poorly worded privacy policy. They later clarified, re-wrote the privacy policy and rolled out the limited telemetry (your basic PC specs, a small portion of your IP address and any info they need when you send them a crash report) as an opt out feature. It's still odd for a company like Muse to own it & it still be open source. Audacity has always been a bit of a toy - it's an audio editor. That design legacy still makes it rather clunky in the workflow department - particularly as it is trying to re-brand it's self closer to a real time DAW. If all you want are basic editing features? great. If you want to eventually do something more advanced start with the unlimited Reaper trial. More on reddit.com

I feel the same way about Audacity and it's terrible. I'm not sure how it even happened - how can an open source project be acquired by a company? But to answer your question: no, that was it. There isn't an alternative. That's what we have. I do the same as you, I just use older versions for my editing and samples. More on reddit.com

October 3, 2023Why exactly do people use Audacity to record? What's the point? Why not just record raw and edit later?
Your phone does not record raw, everything is filtered by your phone, that's why it sound "surprisingly good", the default windows app neither (I don't use any Microsoft's things as I'm on Linux, though, so the later is arguable). Why recording with Audacity? Different people different needs, thus I can answer only for myself. For instance recording directly with Audacity removes the need to switch between software when post-processing immediately, for example to remove any sibilance , which I don't think your "video? editing software" can do neatly. Also Audacity can work internally in 32-bit floating-point , I don't think any of the app you've mentioned have this power and certainly not the one from your phone, that's why people with ears, use Audacity. Others with not so good ears, like me, love Free LIBRE Open Source Software, and after ~25 years of existence will use Audacity for many reasons, the first one is certainly because of all the community help and the online tutos (videos and websites), easy to find the one you need in no time. Hello everyone,
I am currently on the fence of working on Audacity or not. I was recently gifted a mic and wanted to have fun recording audio and practicing voice acting and singing. I instantly thought of using audacity for voice editing, but after some research I saw that there where mixed opinions of whether audacity is safe. How data is collected while using audacity. I want to broaden my thoughts. What are all of you guys thoughts? is audacity safe in your opinion? Is it worth learning to edit audio with this software? or should I look in to another way to edit audio?

I am specifically seeking suggestions for audio editing software, distinct from digital audio workstations (DAWs).
I've been a long time user of Audacity. It has been my go-to audio editor for many years. I've observed what I perceive as a notable decline in its functionality and stability since its acquisition by Muse Group. It appears that there is a shift towards transforming it into a software resembling GarageBand, which is not what I need.
Linux already has several excellent DAWs, and I don't see Audacity replacing them. On the other hand, Audacity became the de-facto audio editor for Linux, but it now seems to be in the process of being repurposed as a front-end for muse group's on-line services. What I need is a really good audio editor.
I am currently using Audacity 2.4.2, which does everything I need. However, given its age and lack of maintenance, I am exploring alternatives that offer similar functionality and reliability. I have a strong preference for open source.
