Check in your Audacity > Plug-Ins folder. It should have a folder called ffmpeg. If it doesn't, create it, then download this zip file and extract it to the ffmpeg folder. Now Audacity should find the avformat-55.dll file. You can check it has by opening Audacity, then going to Edit > Preferences > Libraries and click the Locate button.

I am using Windows 10. I followed this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjtmgCb8NcE but Audacity stills says that it does not have FFmpeg!

Then I went into Audacity's menu. I went to Edit>Preferences>Libraries and I manually set the location for the ffmpeg folder but still Audacity says ffmpeg is missing.

Did you pick the directory that holds the ffmpeg.exe file? The default folder structure has the executable in ffmpeg\bin.

I've had similar issues. Follow the steps on audacity website to get ffmpeg version working. Step 1: Download this version of ffmpeg: here Step 2: extract the files to and copy them to a directory withing the /Programs and Files/Audacity/ffmpeg Step 3: go to audacity Preference and go to libraries. Click on Locate and it should find them automatically. Then you'll be able to drag and drop various video formats and audio formats into audacity to work with the audio files. I've personally use this when working with videos that have been recorded on iPhone devices and I can't simply drag and drop them to audacity. After following the steps above I can drag and drop my files and working with the audio. Guide if you need more information is here and also here Hope it helps.

I keep trying to open an mp3 file on audacity but it keeps saying I tried to use FFmpeg but couldn’t find it. I used to be able to open mp3s with no issue but apparently it wants to use this app instead suddenly. MP3 is meant to be a supported audio type so I shouldn’t need FFmpeg. Does anybody have any tips on how I can fix this?

Edit: if I try to use wav by either importing or opening I get the same error and if i try to open an mp3 it says the file is corrupt or invalid no matter what the file is or where it comes from.

As far as I can remember, Audacity has always needed ffmpeg and/or lame for importing or converting some files. In that case, ffmpeg does not exactly work like a separate "app" in that case, rather like a codec or a command line converter with Audacity running as a GUI. On Linux versions, as ffmpeg and lame are generally already present in the system, this generally causes no issue, but on Windows, you often need to install ffmpeg for Audacity and lame for Audacity.

Which version of Audacity are you running? On what sort of device?

I just upgraded Audacity on my M1 MBP but now my FFMPEG integration is broken. I have tried following the instructions to no avail. I found another reference that stated I needed the arm64 version of ffmpeg since Audacity now runs natively on the M1. I downloaded the 5.1.1 release of ffmpeg from here but it doesn't have the file Audacity is looking for. Any ideas on how to get Audacity 3.2 and ffmpeg working on my M1 MBP?

There is a link in the Audacity settings that leads to the following page. I downloaded RECOMMENDED download:ffmpeg_64bit_osx.pkg and it worked for me on my M1 Air

same situation. downloaded the 64bit version of ffmpeg and installed it successfully. audacity still doesn't see it. tried the alternate download. no luck. i see ffmpeg.55.64bit.dylib in /Library/Application Support/audacity/libs/, where it's supposed to be; i select it in the Locate dialog menu and click open; the window closes as if it worked, and... FFmpeg library not found. so... no luck. tried uninstalling audacity and reinstalling. no luck. tried reinstalling ffmpeg via the installer. nope. tried deleting /Library/Application Support/audacity/libs and reinstalling. i see /Library/Application Support/audacity/libs/ffmpeg_codecs.55.64bit.dylib /Library/Application Support/audacity/libs/ffmpeg_utils.52.64bit.dylib /Library/Application Support/audacity/libs/ffmpeg.55.64bit.dylib at a loss for options, i tried pointing to each of them in turn, to see if that would get audacity to recognize .... something. unsurprisingly, no luck. i don't see debug output options or any kind of error reporting to go on, and i'm seeing this kind of error crop up for people over the years, so there's a lot of noise in the search results. i'm honestly a little surprised that i found this relatively recent post, so i felt like checking in with what i've tried. edit: i just found that the x86 build finds the ffmpeg library without issue. the universal build does not. the arm64 build does not. i also tried some of the earlier releases (namely the beta and alpha releases of 3.2.0) and got the same set of issues. one of the other posts here reports being on an M1 macbook air, so i can't really explain the different outcomes we've all had. but i'm tired enough of debugging this that i'm ready to throw in the towel and conclude that whatever the situation, apple silicon support is hit-or-miss for 3.2.0; maybe having some pre-existing universal/x86 ffmpeg installation dooms you or something. i dunno.

Am trying to automate part of the video creation process i wonder if ffmpeg can do what audacity can do so i can write a script , i tried to look into it i ran into Sox but it seem outdated so i hope to get your input on that :)

Edit : am trying to do noise reduction (same quality as audacity) normalization , remove salience, Limiter Filter, compressor, Equalizer, just to boost the quality of the audio

I feel like ffmpeg does do those things, but you'd have to look in the documentation for syntax and examples.

I have installed audacity 3.0.0 and I have literally spent an hour trying to get to this to work now. I have tried to use the .exes, i have tried to use the zips, several uninstall/reinstalls but nothing works. Every time, I go to preferences and I select browse, and I go to the file location. I select avformart (i used v2.2.2) and try to open. Ok clicked twice, but still the program refuses to cooperate. I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

I guess the error 193 is the problem, but it doesnt make sense why. I installed Audacity 3.0.0 and ffmpeg 2.2.2, both of which are compatible with each other according to the website.

Make sure you're not trying to load 64 bit FFmpeg in 32 bit Audacity or vice versa

I'm running Audacity 3.1.3, Fedora 37 GNOME/43. I've installed FFMPEG "Riemann" 5.1.2 (https://ffmpeg.org/download.html#releases), and I've also tried:

sudo dnf in ffmpeg ffmpeg-devel

Audacity keeps saying:

FFmpeg support not compiled in

I've read the manual and it says something like:

Caution: Audacity supports FFmpeg's libavformat in version 55 (all Audacity versions), 57 and 58 (Audacity 3.1+) and 59 (Audacity 3.2+). If your distribution ships with a different version, it may not get detected, or may not work correctly. In that case, you may need to uninstall FFmpeg again and make a shared build of a supported version

Is compiling FFMPEG from source the only way to get it working in Audacity?

FFmpeg support not compiled in Sounds like you need to build audacity from source (ffmpef support seems to be optional in the spec file). Looking at the rpm source this is an option in the fedora source, I think you want to do this to make an rpm and then install that rpm git clone https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/audacity.git cd audacity git checkout f37 rpmbuild -ba --with ffmpeg audacity.spec Then install the rpms it makes. It's probably going to fail with messages telling you packages you need to install. I'm not a fedora user and I'm writing this off of man pages. But it's best to install using that for uel, that's the the offical source and you're just adding that you want ffmpeg support. Doing it this way gets you an rpm that dnf will properly uninstall and such. Also not sure if you need to download the source tarball or if it's in there.

How do you feel about rpmfusion repository? They have audacity-freeworld package, which is compiled with ffmpeg support. I personally have had good luck with rpmfusion repo (but it is your choice).

Hello,

I am attempting to import MP4 audio from OBS Studio into audacity 2.4.1. The issue is that I keep getting the error: "File is an advanced audio coding file. Without the optional FFmpeg library, Audacity cannot import this file type."

I then followed the instructions given in the Audacity manual and downloaded FFmpeg-win-2.2.2.exe, ran the executable file.

Audacity detected the FFmpeg library, stating that I have FFmpeg Library Version:

F(55.33.100), C (55.52.102), U (55.66.100)

Unfortunately, I am still getting the same error. I have downloaded the zip version of the FFmpeg library and manually navigated to the .dll file in audacity, but that did not work either. I have restarted Audacity and restarted my computer, all to no avail.

Is there a newer version of the FFmpeg library that I am unable to find?

The moderators took this post down, I suspect it was because there was a link to the audacity manual.

I never used OBS, but I think MP4 isn't the best container for this sort of recording because the file will be irrecoverable if not finalized for some reason. MKV or FLV would be better because they don't need the damn mp4 movie atom at the end of the file to become readable. Your Audacity ffmpeg configuration seems to be correct. Did you check whether Audacity is able to open other MP4 files with AAC audio?

When I have a mp4 to start with (usually from a security camera FWIW) I do the following to extract the audio using ffmpeg so I can then import the resulting mp3 into Audacity: ffmpeg -I source-mp4-filename-goes-here.mp4 -f mp3 -vn out mp3-filename-goes-here.mp3

I'm trying to import audio from voice memos on my Mac, which are in .m4a file format. According to what I've researched it should be working, but for some reason it's not.

Look in Edit menu => Preferences => Libraries. You should see "FFmpeg Library Version" followed by a long version number. If there is no version number shown, then FFmpeg is not installed properly. If there is a version number shown, then most likely the .m4a files that you are trying to import are in an unsupported format. (M4A is a "container format", that can hold audio and/or video that are encoded in various ways. Some encodings may be proprietary formats without any publicly available decoders, though most common encodings are supported by FFmpeg).

Hi there, sorry in advance if this is a dumb question, I couldn't find an answer elsewhere. I'm using audacity 2.3.2 on linux and I'm trying to open an m4a file. It says that I need to have an optional ffmpeg library installed in order to do so. I have ffmpeg 4.1.2 installed and when I go to edit -> preferences, the option to locate or download the ffmpeg library are grayed out. I'm not very tech savvy so there's probably something else I have to do before it actually work, any help or advice would be appreciated.

*Start with the Help, Diagnostics, Show Log (Audacity help, about that log. If you use the optional FFmpeg library , the log shows entries for the steps to load the individual FFmpeg components and whether FFmpeg load succeeded.) the log may say what failed to load. *also may be folder permission issue, or version conflict. (guessing from other similar issues i saw)

Select "Custom FFmpeg Export", then click on "Open custom FFmpeg options" Click the "Show all formats" button, then select "adx" in the leftmost list Click the "OK" button to close the FFmpeg options Navigate in the file browser to where you want to export the file Enter a name for the exported file, including ".adx" as the file extension Click the "Save" button. ADX is a very old and rarely used file format. Unless you are using hardware or software that specifically requires this format I'd recommend that you use a more modern format.
