Are Audioengine speakers really that bad?
The A5+ are decent but you can usually get something better for the price. The Wharfedales probably aren't any better. Since the A5+ have been properly measured at ASR, they're easy to EQ into a more "accurate" sound More on reddit.com

Audio engine A2 Worth it for $75?
I have a pair of these attached to my computer via a Schiit stack. I liked that they were so short they would fit under my monitor, which keeps my desk very streamlined. I’m not much of a “hardcore” audiophile so not sure how valuable this is, but I think the sound quality is good and I’m able to drive them pretty loudly when needed. I got mine off of eBay for $165 so $75 seems like a good price. More on reddit.com

I have a pair of Audioengine HD3 speakers and need suggestions on what to buy for accessories and a subwoofer

I am new to the world of audio and was not sure if I should look into a beginner amp or DAC, as well as a subwoofer.

My biggest question was if I got a subwoofer, (the HD3 is apparently lack luster in the bass dtp.) do I have to get the audio engine woofer or can any work? As well as what is the best subwoofer on a budget for the “quality” of speakers they are? Thanks!

r/BudgetAudiophile on Reddit: Are Audioengine speakers really that bad?
January 15, 2023 -

I've been meaning to buy some budget speakers for my small living room and I've been lurking this subreddit for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, I live in SE Asia and speaker choices are a bit limited. I wanted to buy from a brick and mortar store as much as possible for less hassle free warranty services ahould something go wrong. Were I'm from you can't really return products unless there's something wrong so auditioning speakers at home then returning them are out the question.

The only speakers, aside from.the usual bluetooth JBLs and Marshalls, that I could buy from a physical store are Audioengines. However, they seem to have a less than stellar reputation on reddit recently (a couple of years). If I look at older posts, they seemed to have been recommended a lot previously. Is this due to the the availability of cheaper and smaller amps which makes passive speakers a better recommendation?

So my question is, are they really that bad? Would an A5+ be significantly inferior to let's say Wharfedale D310s and SMSL AD18 to someone with an untrained ear? For reference, the A5+ costs around 500USD while the passive combo around 300USD. I can get the A5+ via zero interest installment over a year while the combo would be straight cash.

Please help out a 3rd world brother. Thanks.

AudioEngine A2+ Review
I propped the AudioEngine A2+ up onto of my Micca club subs to bring them up to ear level for initial impressions, but quickly found them lacking. After moving a truckload of stuff off of my desk I went with the stands they were designed to use and things improved. The A2+ has bass response that is impressive for any desktop speaker, and to hear sound this full come from a speaker this size is surprising.

Each bass-reflex speaker measures 11.75”H x 7.25”W x 10”D; the electronics-stuffed left one weighs 17.5 pounds, the passive right 12.5 pounds. The HD6 has a claimed frequency response of 50Hz-22kHz, ±1.5dB, a wireless range of approximately 100’, and a wireless latency of ~30ms. The HD6 sharply diverges from the A5+ in including the circuits from Audioengine’s B1 Bluetooth receiver (which supports the aptX, AAC, and SBC codecs) and D1 24-bit asynchronous DAC.
