In my experience (both for my own store and running discounts while I worked at Uber) discounts that are automatically applied will almost always have a higher redemption rate and drive more conversion. The issue is the cost of that extra conversion. By making them apply automatically you'll have more customers get the discount who would have placed a full priced order anyway. When we ran discount A/B tests between codes and automatic discounts, we saw that codes drove less incremental revenue but automatic discounts caused lower profitability. Hi all!
Trialling automatic volume discounts this month (eg buy 2 save 10%, buy 4 get 1 free) instead of customers inputting a discount code into the minicart with a 3rd party app.
Just wondering if this is likely to improve conversion rate as its a simpler purchasing experience? Or do customers like to always use codes? Our YTD stats are:
Add to cart 6.79% Checkout 5.70% Sessions converted 3.72%
If the automatic discounts are successful, hoping to remove the discount app, especially since the discount code is now available clearly on the 1 page checkout.
Appreciate anyone's thoughts on this!

Automatic discounts are definitely superior when you don't need some of the extra controls that only discount codes offer. If you need to limit the discount to a certain customer segment, for example, you would still need to use discount codes. As a shopper, I love seeing an automatic discount added to my cart without having to do anything. I always get 10-15% off just for having a decent order value from one of my favorite Shopify stores. They also offer same day local delivery for free above a certain value, 7 days a week. Makes them stand out from any other of the same businesses in my area. I think you need to define the intention of the discount and then choose the best discount method and type. Ease of use is definitely high on my priority list, but you need to know your customers. If they are primarily driven by exclusivity and direct email and social media marketing, then an automatic discount might erode their trust. Lots of things to consider :)
