Based on stellar reviews, we went to see Past Luves at the Avalon. The movie didn't live up to the advance notices for any of the four of us. But that's not the theater's faylt: The Avalin has been an indie/art film movie house on Connecticut Avenue for longer than I've lived in the area (since 1969) and there's a reason it's stayed alive; when they ran into financial hardship a few decades ago, the community swung in to the rescue, financing restoration work and turning it into a much-loved jewel in the neighborhood.
