The last decent used car I had was a 99 Toyota Camry. Got it with 230,000 Mi for $2,800, put about $9,000 into it over 2 years in maintenance and repairs, got to 318,000 Mi before it gave out. I think anything decent now is probably starting at anywhere between 5,000. Answer from deliverykp on reddit.com

The average cost of a new car tops $50,000 for the first time ever
Today’s auto market is being driven by wealthier households who have access to capital, good loan rates and are propping up the higher end of the market So rich people can still afford nicer cars, others are holding off. This somewhat tracks as (even maxed out on trim) most cars fall under $50k unless they're from a luxury brand. Even the luxury brands prices typically start under the $50k mark. Also probably a poor choice to use "average" instead of the median price, as there's some large outliers that likely shift the average higher than you'd think. More on reddit.com
