Mainly looking at people who's had their used car for a little and it's been pretty fair. Maybe it needed tires or breaks but no major issues like engine or transmission issues that put it out of commission shortly after purchase.

Last car I bought was a 2008 cobalt with about 165k on it. 1200 bucks. I’ve put front brakes and a turn signal switch in it, which were under 100 bucks in parts total. It’s had a pair of tires that were about 80 bucks each, and oil changes. I think I’ve had it for 3 or 4 years now. It’s at 205k now and not really in need of anything at the moment.

No offense intended, but if you're driving a car worth $500 - throwing anything but gas, oil, and oil filters at it is a fool's pursuit. When it flat out quits running, call the guy that gives you fifty bucks to tow it to the junk yard and spend that $600 on another $500 car.
