August 16, 2022 -
Hi, I just turned 18 and applied for a credit card on the day of my 18th birthday. I was shocked to see that I was approved right away.... but even more surprised when I was approved for a $5000 limit. I am a university student with a part time job, but I have been with this bank for around 6-7 years with 15k-17k saved in my accounts. I know that a credit limit of $500-1000 is typical for a 18 year old uni student.... but In my case (6-7 years with the same bank, 15k in savings) does a $5000 credit limit make sense???

I can't give you a definitive answer but to me, it seems like a lot of credit card to give to an 18 year old. Seems a bit predatory even, they have to know that'll ruin some people. That being said, it's not really a concern if you'll be reasonable with it.

Its not too unusual but I need to warn you very much against using this card except for emergencies. Stay below 30% utilization and try to pay it off every month if you can. You need to be careful, I dont know if this is the case here but lots of banks will do this so you max out a card and end up paying min payments for years netting them a shit ton of fees and interest each month. This debt servitude is a trap lots of young people fall into so be very wary.
