If i purchase Dedicated Host and run Ec2 on it. Is Ec2 free or i have to pay host + ec2 fee?
Don’t think in terms of host, think in terms of VMs.
An instance in AWS is a VM. What kind (size) of isntance do you need?
And instance would be EC2, that’s your ‘fixed’ cost, you’ll have to pay for it for every hour it is running.
Here you can see the instance types: Compute – Amazon EC2 Instance Types – AWS
Here is instance pricing: EC2 On-Demand Instance Pricing – Amazon Web Services
In the tool you linked you do that under the Amazon ECS tab on the left
Once you have your instances figured out, you’ll need to add storage needs [EBS Volume] (there are different kinds too, such as SSD,HDD,magnetic) etc
You can not mix and match like you’d do on prem with your hypervisor, you have to pick one of the instances that AWS provides
For example for your " 4 virtual proc’s, w/ 24GB RAM" there is no instances like that, so you select the next closest matching one.
e.g. r3.xlarge or m3.2xlarge etc, you have to compare the pricing and ‘best fit’ between them
Does that help clear things up?
So the higher ups here ‘cloud’, then all of a sudden it’s “Cloud! Cloud! We must do the cloud!” I have been asked to get some pricing on this.
I am totally confused on how to price with AWS EC2. I’m trying to work with this cost estimator:
http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html
Here’s what I have got for my physical server, that I’m trying to compare to:
- 2 sockets, 8 cores, 16 logical proc’s (3.30 GHz)
- 4.5TB in local HDD’s
- Hyper-V (stand-alone, non-clustered)
- 160GB RAM
On the above physical server, I have:
- 11 total guest VM’s running
- 2 of the 11 are running Microsoft SQL
- 1 @ 4 virtual proc’s, w/ 24GB RAM
- 1 @ 8 virtual proc’s, w/ 32GB RAM
- All others are 2 virtual proc’s @ 8GB RAM each, to keep things simple
So my question, how do I use this tool to get as close as possible to an apples-apples? It sounds like what I would want is Dedicated Host pricing. Since the above mentioned VM’s are always running, would I do a row for each VM to its own Dedicated Host? Just price a Dedicated Host to match (as close as possible) the physical box?
P.S. First, I would appreciate any responses that can give guidance on pricing. I don’t want to/need to hear your opinions/advice on how going to the cloud doesn’t save money, it doesn’t do this or that and the other thing. I know all that, but I need to get pricing. Second, this is exploratory and I am not going to work with a consulting company to get quotes, please don’t promote your “cloud consulting company”, you’ll only be wasting your time.
