The AWS Service I Hate the Most - Last Week in AWS Blog
February 3, 2022 - You can pick any service from AWS’s service list — any service at all, and you’d be wrong, because the service I like the least doesn’t appear on any of them. In fact, most people have never heard of it. ... Isengard has been named and described semi-frequently by Amazonians in open ...

r/aws on Reddit: The AWS Service I Hate the Most
November 28, 2021 -
Actually a very interesting blog post - https://www.lastweekinaws.com/blog/the-aws-service-i-hate-the-most/ by u/quinnypig. I wonder how many such internal tools AWS has hidden away that may be useful to their customers?

EDIT: I used Isengard multiple times a day when I worked at twitch. It made it very simple to login to the dozen+ AWS accounts I had access to and had to work in. Corey’s right, I wish I had access to it as an ex-AWS employee.

This is so spot on it hurts. Isengard is definitely one of the internal tools I miss the most. AWS SSO + Control Tower is a pretty limited substitute. The article doesn't go into it, but the best part about Isengard was that it wasn't limited to being managed via the webapp and had infrastructure-as-code provider definitions for internal use. Creating new accounts, reorganizing them into different hierarchies, and more could all be done as code.

Notable Internal Systems at Amazon - The Pragmatic Engineer
March 3, 2022 - MAWS requires services to be spun up on EC2 machines via a system called Apollo, but this is basically obsolete with native AWS (for which you're expected to use Lambda, or ECS, or raw EC2 if absolutely necessary). Isengard/Conduit - AWS Account management (all systems are isolated so that each region, service and stage has a unique AWS account.

r/aws on Reddit: Any Open Source projects out there that provide similar functionality to Isengard?
April 22, 2022 -
Off the back of an earlier discussion following Corey’s blog, has anyone come across anything with similar functionality? Ex-AWS here and while Burner Accounts don’t seem a challenge to mimic, Isengard is kinda complex.
Basic requirement:
Allow authorised individuals to arbitrarily spin up POC/demo accounts not tied to an existing org.

We use org-formation to spin up sandboxes, and use aws nuke to clean them after a sandbox project is finished after which they are placed back into a "pool". I think as a mere user this is the best that you'll get since you will always need a payment method in an account, so they need to be members of an org. https://github.com/org-formation

Have you looked at DCE? I have covered a few projects that do similar things to Isenguard in my newsletter but can’t remember the specifics https://github.com/Optum/dce
