December 13, 2024Getting Estimated Monthly Costs for RDS on AWS Free Tier Account
I think the answer is simple: this page doesn't take into account the free tier. That's why it's estimated costs only. It doesn't know if this is your first or your tenth instance. Or if you will turn it off after a week....etc..... So it doesn't try to apply any free tier to the calculation. The free tier is a billing construct that's applied at the end as a discount when figuring out your final charges and all usage is actually known. Edit: To add, you'll notice for the same reasons its just on-demand charge as well. It doesnt try to apply any savings plans or reserved instances - which are very common things. All that is too complex to apply on the fly in here in (what I think is) the RDS creation screen and needs to be done on the billing system. More on reddit.com

The public version at calculator.aws is completely free with no AWS account required. However, the new in-console version (launched May 2025) that imports historical usage and estimates full bills charges $2 per estimate after 5 free estimates per month.

Always been afraid to spin up a DB as a service on AWS. Want to bite the bullet so looked at price calculator for:
RDS Postgres
db.t3.micro
Single -AZ (On Demand)
20 GB (gp3) Storage
When I look under Show Calculations for "PostgreSQL instance specifications" it shows an estimate of
$3.29 per month
and under storage
$2.30 per month
However the summary after I click Save and View Summary it shows an estimated monthly cost of
$27.49
Does the summary assume 100% utilization 24/7 throughout the month?? Not sure what I might be missing and want to confirm that it would be around $5.59 if i only used it about 1/4 of the time in the month.

Hi there.
Cost explorer will not show you costs broken down per instance or for a single instance. You should use the AWS Pricing Calculator to get an estimate of what your RDS instance will cost.

Immediate question - why is Hetzner available only up to 8 cores? There are more things in their offers than VPS, and their root servers are great price-wise. For example: 24 core xeon, with 256GB of ram, 2x 1.92 TB for $150 per month? On the higher end scale I can find their boxes with epyc 7502 (32 cores), 1TB of ram, and 8 total ssds with total size of ~ 6TB for $747 per month.
