October 13, 2021 - Called around a couple of local furniture places and ended up getting in touch with a "vintage furniture expert". He had me text him a picture of the bottom and he said the issue is that the middle wire is broken. Apparently it's supposed to loop through that black piece on the middle right which causes that piece to catch hooks (not pictured) so it stays locked in the reclining position.

January 15, 2024 - The amount of force needed to push the footrest down is a "balancing act" between support to keep the foot rest up and the force needed to fold it down so you can get out of the chair. On all the mass produced recliners that I've seen, that "balancing act" has to take into account all the "heavy butted folks" as well as that little old lady that uses a walker to get around. So, the compromise in the "not adjustable recliner footrest" and the "force needed for her to get out of the chair" means that some people may find the foot rest not staying up in all reclining positions.
