I've been using ente for the last year or two and have been pretty satisfied with it. It's end-to-end encrypted and the clients are open source. And while it can't be verified because it's not open source, Apple recently added support for end-to-end encryption for most data on iCloud, including photos. Due to the limitations iOS imposes on apps running in the background, automatic photo backups aren't as reliable with third-party apps as with iCloud.
