Ball gouge Verse Kutzall Burr - Woodcarving Illustrated
Have any of y'all ever had one of your expensive 1/4" shank Kutzall or Saburr bits roll in a confined space and bend the shaft? Then when you try to use it vibrates excessively and would be hard on the bearings in your die grinder or hand piece. I have had this ball gouge for a few years now ... Arbortech Ball Gouge on end grain ash
Matt Carves on YouTube has a video where he talks about preventing tear out (using the ball gouge). That might be worth a look, I’m not sure if he specifically talks about end grain though. More on reddit.com

Arbortech advice
What, are you just trying to make everyone jealous? Just kidding of course. Sounds like you are set up quite well, and have more than enough tools to jump into just about any type of protect you want. Without knowing what type of carvings you have in mind it would be hard to tell you what else you need. I’ve used a cheap knockoff of the turboplane and I really liked the aggressive nature of the removal, but it being a cheap knockoff made me scared to use it too much. I’ve been eyeballing the ball gouge for a while but haven’t been able to justify the cost at this time. Be careful with the turboplane. The kickback can be scary if you get it into too tight of a space. I’d say just dive in with what you have, explore Kutzall, Arbortech, King Arthur Tools and Manpa. All are quality tool makers and you’ll probably figure out what you “need” before too long. Also, if your gonna be carving big stuff, consider a die grinder and possibly a chainsaw. August 12, 2010 - You want a gouge that has roughly the same curvature as the ball so that as you approach the finished ball, the gouge transfers its shape to the ball and everything flows together. Something like a 1/2"-3/4" #3 or #4 sweep in the London system or a 12mm-18mm #2 or #3 in the Swiss system.
