Makerworld reviews
Videos
I've had a 3d printer since about 2016. I really enjoy both the modeling and equipment aspects.
One thing I've observed, which I don't like, is bad reviews in makerworld... like it's freaking Amazon. Usually it's blaming the profile but sometimes a flaw in the model. Edit: I now realize that the model itself can only be liked/boosted and the star ratings are just for the profiles. I was initially thinking the reviews also impacted the models rating.
Has the "plug & play" printer, along with the ability to use other peoples print profiles, created a consumer who is unwilling/unable to figure stuff out on their own? It appears so.
If a print profile doesn't work, don't blame the author without first making sure your machine is working correctly and trying to print it using your own best settings. Fix the issues and comment the improvements. Similarly, if a model has problems then remix it and fix them! You can point out the problems in a comment, but don't leave a bad rating.
My fear is that the rating system is making people lazy and also causing good models to go unnoticed.
To summarize:
-
The creator of an uploaded model owes you nothing. No need for a bad rating.
-
All models are works in progress. If you see a problem make a suggestion or remix it yourself.
-
Ignore the rating system. Don't just grab the most popular models. Analyze multiple choices and decide for yourself which model is best, take an existing model and remix to suit your needs, or submit your own.
Note: This applies to open source. If you paid for something that's different and the amount of support you get will vary.
