This is helpful for sure and you are doing a great service by doing so. So thank you. On the other hand, the fact that this even needs to be posted shows what a ridiculous sh*t show BoA’s tech is. It really is THAT bad and worse than you think it is if you have never used it. It’s impossible to reconcile how a bank as large as BoA still has such an arcane screwy process in place for setting up autopay and they should be absolutely ashamed. I’ve been a BoA customer for a decade+ and every time I have to setup autopay it’s a pain in the a$$ because of their technology. I’ve done it several times now but I always forget how the system works. I recently got a C1 and Chase credit card and, being a completely new customer, was able to setup autopay on their sites in one minute and required no help and I didn’t have to wait for a freaking statement to post in order to set autopay up either. BoA, seriously, fix your garbage site! Damn. Answer from ColorMonochrome on reddit.com

r/CreditCards on Reddit: How To: Set up Bank of America credit card auto pay
October 9, 2024 -

This seems like a completely impossible task in the Bank of America App/UI, to setup autopay for a bank of america credit card (specially if you want the autopay to be from an external checking account).

You can see so many other older reddit threads asking about it: https://www.google.com/search?q=setup+bank+of+america+autopay+reddit

So here I'm giving a how-to to help others, this process finally worked for me:

  • Add your credit card to your bank of america login

  • Have an external (or bank of america) checking account linked to the same login

  • Wait for at least one credit card statement to post (you cannot setup autopay before that).

  • Under your main account page, "Pay and Transfer" -> "Bill Pay / Make a Payment" option (it will open up a "Payment Center" UI page.

  • Search for your credit card on that page, and click "Request E-Bill". A popup will open up, asking for the last four of your social, enter that, click 'add', then select checkbox agreeing to terms and click 'submit'. The popup will say "you have setup ebills now you can setup autopay".

  • Now refresh the page (or re-open the "Payment Center" page agin). You must refresh. I was getting stuck at this step earlier.

  • After refreshing, you'll see "Autopay" link under your credit card. Now you can setup autopay

r/personalfinance on Reddit: How to setup auto pay for you credit card of Bank of America
April 22, 2019 -

You may heard that it's doable but it's really silly and hard to find the right path. Just wasted 3 hours of my life browsing the website and app, talking to really nice customer service and failed. Finally found the path myself and share it here so anyone reading this won't waste any time.

You will need at least 1 monthly statement of your credit card to enable the ebills and then setup autopay*.*

Step 1: Log in to Bank of America online banking website.

Step 2: Under accounts tab, click your credit card.

Step 3: In the upper right corner you will see a box with title "Pay this card", there is a button says "Make Payment", click it.

Step 4: A dialog box will pop out, click "pay from" and choose your account that used to pay the credit card. Click in the "Amount" box and you can see dropdown of your statement balance and current balance. Choose the statement balance. No need to continue. Click "go to bill pay page" link.

Step 5: Now you are in the bill pay page and you can see your credit card account. Click "request ebills" and fill the form. Now you will need to wait for the next billing circle and your ebill will show up.

Step 6: When the ebill shows up, select ebill, setup autopay with different options: Statement Balance/Minimum Due/Current Balance, etc.

And that's it.

Bank of America credit card autopay deconstruction - Bogleheads.org
But when the "ebill" (whatever that is) is due, BOA pay the full amount of the ebill, ignoring any prepayments that I've made. So my account goes negative. So there IS a difference between the ebill and the statement, because when I make payments myself, they go to the credit card and are immediately logged on the statement. When I make payments through AutoPay, they go to the ebill.

Back in the day, you enrolled with a paper form, or by going to a dedicated webpage "Choose Direct Debit" or similar and entered your account number with banking details.

Bank of America credit card “feature” (be careful with autopay) - Bogleheads.org
This is where BoA is sneakier than most banks. They equate "pay the amount due" as "minimum payment due" instead of "full statement balance." They do give you the full statement balance option though: Last edited by SpaethCo on Tue Sep 18, 2018 10:29 am, edited 1 time in total. ... wangarific wrote: Tue Sep 18, 2018 6:33 am ... but why did you manually pay when you had autopay set up already? A Balance Transfer allows you to access up to your total available credit on your personal credit card, and pay off or pay down balances from retail/department store/gas cards, or other non- Bank of America credit cards and personal loans or lines of credit. This helps you consolidate bills, enjoy the convenience of one monthly statement and payment, and can save you money by paying down your higher-rate debt faster. Most Balance Transfers are completed in 2-4 business days. For new accounts, it takes 14 business days from opening. January 27, 2023 - Knowing that the balance had already been paid, I fully expected the autopay system to just cancel the transaction, or worst-case, they'd adjust the amount to the current balance. Nope. Their system pulled the full statement balance, driving my CC balance negative. I'm not in a position where giving my credit card company a loan is going to destroy me financially, but why on earth are there no safeguards against this sort of thing? I now need to explain to my budgeting system (YNAB -- try it!) where my payment came from.
