r/CreditCards on Reddit: Are BofA credit cards really that bad?
December 17, 2023 -

So, I’m quite immature when it comes to credit cards market knowledge, I’ve just been using BofA customized cash rewards because I already had a checking account there since teen years. I’ve watched some cards rankings and saw that nobody is taking BofA cards seriously. Am I really missing out? That card that I have gives 3% to pretty much every online purchase(Amazon, etc), 2% groceries/wholesale and 1% everything else with $2500 quarterly limit for 3% and 2% stuff. Correct me if I’m wrong but this seems like a perfect all around card. Is there an objectively way better all around ecosystem? One alternative I see is using chase freedom unlimited+chase amazon prime combo along with chase's checkings. I really enjoy having a single portal for all banking, at least until I start doing savings/investing stuff. Also, does bofa portal user interface and app suck compared to others vendors or is it alright, I’m a bit of a sucker for nice front end.

BoA actually has a great eco system for credit cards, and many of us use them. There is a small subset of us on this sub that sees the advantage, but many people are thrown off because the advantage is linked to your wealth. They are among the highest cashback offerings in the market. The issue is they cater to the top 1/3 of the country and seek to make relationships with those on fiscally better ground. They're known for being aggressive with junk fees to those living tight on money. They require a good deal of money in Bank of america / Merrill Edge accounts to get better cashback. If you get the 75% bonus on the cashback rates from having $100k+ in a Bank of america or Merrill Edge account, it's great. If you're middle-aged or older, it's really easy to do just by having a retirement account with Merrill Edge. You also get a 25% bonus with $25k and a 50% bonus with $50k in accounts. I have the CCR + premium rewards. Many people also get multiple CCRs and pick multiple categories. With the 75% bonus us they can get you 5.25% cashback. Bank of America has always done right with me, but I never had to worry about junk fees or anything. If I didn't have the bonus, I'd probably consider AMEX Blue Cash Everyday (3% back on online shopping, gas, and grocery) and/or capitol on savorone (3% cashback on grocery/dining/streaming). They get the same cashback, but with multiple categories on the single card.

My oldest credit card is a BofA with a 60k limit. I don't use it much, but am wanting to switch it to whatever their best rewards card currently is. I think this card is the BankAmericard Rewards. Looking online, I'm assuming the BofA Customized Cash Rewards card is my best option? (I don't have a big checking acct balance to qualify for that other high end setup with banking customers). Also wanting it to be $0 annual fee.

I keep reading all kinds of horror stories related to Bank of America. If any of you have a BoA card, how do you like it? Is it reliable to set up autopay and pay through a different institution? Did you have any issues with fraud/decreased credit limits/any other issues?

I really want to get BoA cards and establish Platinum Honors status but I'm worried that it's going to be more pain than its worth. I have a checking/Merrill Edge account, but don't currently bank primarily with them.

Yes it’s one of the largest banks in the world, but I’ve never understood the appeal of their CC’s. I see people using their cards like the Customized Cash and Travel Rewards all the time. I feel like there’s so many better options out there. Are they just easy to get approved for or are they so common cause so many people bank with them?

I’ve had a checking account with Bank of America for a few years now. They once offered me a secured credit card, but since then, they’ve never offered me anything else—not even a regular credit card. I always keep money in my account and have a stable, good income. What’s the best option to get approved for a credit card with a decent limit? Should I stay with BoA or try a different bank? My credit now is around 680. Any advice is appreciated.

AVOID Bank of America Credit Cards!

I do not often take the time to write these types of posts to notify the world of disappointing service. Overall, stay away from Bank of America Credit cards. I had multiple accounts with them over many years (I have excellent credit and paid them all off - including a mortgage) and am in the process of closing this credit card account. Despite my great account standing, due to my auto payments not going through, they denied removing the late fees. WTF?? What a silly reason to lose a good standing customer. Maybe they prefer to prey upon young college students who will end up paying ridiculous interest rates simply because they do not have the credit history.

Truly, I demonstrated that the autopay function was set up, got my account current the day they contacted me and they still would not do that simple courtesy. Not that the late fees are going create a financial hardship, but there was no attempt to treat me as the customer.

There are A LOT of other credit card companies that are much better at treating their customers as valuable. Goodbye Bank of America!

r/CreditCards on Reddit: Credit Card Strategy Based on the Bank of America Preferred Rewards Elite
July 11, 2025 -

The refreshed Chase Sapphire Reserve doesn't work for me. After some research, I've settled on a new credit card strategy. I'm posting it in case helpful for others -- and would love to hear any feedback.

About myself: I'm a somewhat frequent business traveler who often has to make last-minute changes, so I find travel portals cumbersome. My other major expenses center on groceries, dining, personal travel (always coach), Costco (including gasoline), Amazon, and miscellaneous online shopping. My personal schedule isn't flexible enough for rewards-based travel (nor am I willing to invest the time). Plus, I can't get as much out of rewards-based travel because I'm a frugal guy who travels coach. I value simplicity, and I don't have the presence of mind to keep track of coupon books. I want good travel protections. I'm fortunate enough to have substantial assets.

I'm thinking of using the Bank of America Preferred Rewards Elite (PRE); I would qualify for BOA's Preferred Rewards Platinum Honors (which supercharges the card) by parking >$100k of investments in Merrill Lynch.

Here's how the effective annual fee works out, which is extremely low for me compared to alternative premium credit cards.

Annual Fee$550
Flight Incidental Credit-$300
"Lifestyle Conveniences" Credit-$150
Global Entry ($120 / 4 years)-$30
Effective Annual Fee$70

And the rewards look like this, after the 75% points booster for Platinum Honors clients. BOA points, while non-transferable, are worth 1.25 cents when a PRE cardholder books flights through the BOA portal -- making the rewards even better:

CategoryCash Value of PointsValue of Points When Booking Flights Through BOA Portal
Catchall2.625%3.28%
Dining3.5%4.375%
Any travel (including direct-booked travel)3.5%4.375%

Does this make sense? My thinking is:

  • With the PRE, I feel like I'm getting a killer catchall card, a killer dining card, and a pretty good travel card in one low-annual-fee package.

  • Because Priority Pass lounges are so crowded these days, the fact that the PRE still comes with the Priority Pass dining credit is also a nice perk.

  • I modestly prefer Visa over AmEx for international travel.

  • I don't think I'd use many of the coupons offered by AmEx Platinum and the new Chase Sapphire Reserve.

  • I expense enough airline incidentals for work that the $300 credit is truly a $300 value. I wouldn't be racking up incidentals that I wouldn't otherwise incur.

I might be leaving some points on the table (e.g., AmEx Platinum does 5x points on most travel, the new Chase Sapphire Reserve does 8 points on all portal-booked travel, and Capital One VX does 10 points on all portal-booked hotels).

But I want a setup that's powerful and simple -- even if it's not 100% optimal.

I plan to supplement this main credit card with:

  • A good grocery card (e.g., AAA card for 5% -- up to a cap of $10k in spend/year).

  • The Amazon Prime Visa (5% back on Amazon).

  • The Costco Visa card (5% back on gas).

  • The Bank of America Custom Cash Rewards (5.25% on pretty much anything online, 8.25% during the first year, and ability to create multiple copies to bypass caps).

r/CreditCards on Reddit: Bank of America seems to have a real pre approval tool now
December 9, 2025 -

The normal pre approval tool for BoA is notoriously unreliable, and is more of a marketing thing. People have made up info and been pre approved for everything.

But now if you go to an individual credit card page it seems you can do an actual pre approval for a specific card. I tested it, and it correctly didn't pre approve me for the CCR as I'm over 3/12 and don't have a BoA deposit account at the moment. I saw elsewhere and people were testing it and some were Preapproved while others weren't.

r/CreditCards on Reddit: Bank of America changes to their credit card rewards
May 16, 2025 -

BofA introduced upgrades to two of their $0 AF credit cards today.

New cardholders will be able to leverage increased cash back percentages in the first year after opening the CCR or UCR. Particularly interesting for preferred rewards members to apply the 25-75% multiplier on these.

If I'm interpreting correctly, platinum honors - diamond tier users would get 10.50% cash back in the first year of opening on the category of their choice for the CCR card...still capped on the quarterly spend however.

The SUB is the same as it has been so far in 2025 ($200 after $1000 spend in first 90 days)

June 11, 2025 -

Not sure if this is something others have run into. I'm applying for a credit card with BofA (my first CC!) and on the transfer balance section of the application, the website won't let me enter my 12-digit savings account number unless it's formatted with 14 digits. The alert shows up as "Please enter the account number of the balance you wish to transfer using numbers only," which, what. My first instinct was to put an extra 00 in front of it, but if that's not the right way to format it that sounds like a great way to get my application denied. Wondering if this is a quick fix or if I should wait and get on the phone with customer service tomorrow morning.

r/CreditCards on Reddit: Why is the BofA / BOA card OP?
June 4, 2025 -

What makes this card so OP with Platinum Honors status? I have Platinum Honors status and despite reading a few posts here already but still am not clear the set up.

I’m a heavy travel-based points earner (Amex MR / Chase UR) so a lot of my consideration is maximizing points redemptions and travel-related credits / benefits. That said, I am open to a cash back model especially since I’m Platinum Honors already, and have a decent amount of spend (depending on how OP it is, can assume anywhere from $20k-$50k+).

I believe the two cash back cards are Customized Cash Rewards and Unlimited Cash Rewards. Is the Travel Rewards, Platinum Rewards or Premium Platinum Rewards worth it or is the set up more related to cash back?

I have no BofA cards because I’ve focused on Chase/Amex. I want to make sure I’m not missing out on anything with BofA.

r/CreditCards on Reddit: Is it worth moving $100k to BofA for the 2.625% “catch-all” card?
June 20, 2025 -

I’ve been spending too much mental energy trying to optimize which credit card to use for each category. Here’s a rough breakdown of my annual spending: • $4k non-Costco groceries • $3.5k Costco • $3k travel • $4k dining • $4k utilities • $3k general shopping • $6k everything else

I’m thinking of simplifying with a “catch-all” card. The BofA Unlimited Cash Rewards + Platinum Honors would get me 2.625% if I move $100k into a Merrill account.

Is this a smart move? The only real downside I see is needing to file taxes for another brokerage account.

March 21, 2025 -

Hey everyone, just wanted to clarify I’m doing this correctly so I don’t get denied due to rules. BofA has the 2/3/4 rule so that means I can apply for the CCR and UCR with no issues as long as I’m under the 7/12. I can also apply for an affiliate CCR that won’t count towards the 2/3/4 correct? Assuming I apply for all of these within a couple months of course. Also, is there still a way to get BofA to only use 1 hard pull for 2 cards? One last question if anyone knows, would it still be possible to get a Mastercard version of a CCR through PC or another way? Thanks for the help!

r/CreditCards on Reddit: Soliciting opinions on Bank of America reliability
May 24, 2025 -

After reading many positive reviews of BofA cards with Platinum Honors here in r/CreditCards, I was really excited to get some of my own. I even told a few other people how it seemed like a great setup to have.

After my first real experiences with BofA, I'm having second thoughts, and in the absence of other data I'm leaning toward closing the accounts I just opened and not even applying for their credit cards. But I thought I'd ask about others' experiences with BofA before making a firm decision.

The biggest issue I'm concerned about is their reliability. I don't want to risk late credit card payments, because moving money in and out of BofA seems like maybe it isn't always a fast and reliable process. With other banks I've worked with, payments and transfers take two or three days at most. Usually it shows up in the remote account as pending either immediately or the next day, and often clears the day after that. I can just schedule a payment and trust that it will go through on time and without problems.

I opened my checking account with BofA on July 3 and used their web interface to fund the account with an ACH transfer from a Chase checking account on July 3. The ACH appeared with "pending" status in my Chase account on July 7, and cleared on the Chase side July 8. My BofA account was still empty the morning of July 11. Three calls and over an hour of my time later, they credited my account, but this whole process left a very bad taste in my mouth.

I hesitate mainly because it seems to me this had to be a very unusual thing. I mean, they're a bank. They had one job. Right?

So, citizens of r/CreditCards, I ask you: was this an extremely unusual occurrence? Or do you have a similar story? Should I listen to my instincts and GTFO?

I have been at BofA for about 10 years and have had no issues with them with respect to ACH or payment reliability. They seem a little slower than say Chase or Amex in crediting payments to my credit card (I pay my PRE from Fidelity) but about the same time as a card I have with Syncrony. I do not use billpay anywhere. My customer service experiences have been good on the phone and at the branch, but I do not bother them much. Only issue is at my asset level (it used to be $250K threshold not sure what it is now) I get the wealth management people when I call in for anything. This can be a blessing sometimes because they will get you to the right person, or a burden because they will transfer you within BofA and it seems like they have no priority, so it was just a layer-but they do pick up quickly. Others will say the UI is clunky, and I agree, but I can get it work. I look at BofA and Merrill as a back-up transactional bank and brokerage to Fidelity with a huge side benefit of very good credit card options, and a brick and mortar bank for Zelle, cash, rare checks, and other weird teller services I may need. IMHO, BofA's Zelle system and their ATM/Debit card controls are very good, as are the variety of alert settings on the credit cards and the accounts.

I have both Chase and BoA checking accounts. They both are reliable. But we always initiate credit cards payment from card issuing banks, other than the checking account banks. That virtually guarantee no late payment as long as you have sufficient funds. BTW, you can move your IRA or brokerage holdings to Merrill, and they are counted for your reward status purpose. I personally don't park my cash position at BoA checking/saving accounts as they don't offer any good interest rates at all.
