February 13, 2023 - Be warned though, not all Barcaloungers are the same. I've had one for 20+ years now that I wanted to update. It was still super comfortable but was showing some wear and I wanted a more modern style. Bought a new Barcalounger and it is nowhere near the same quality or comfort.

I had never heard of them and didn't even know what they were saying for the longest time. I thought they were saying "Barkerlounger" and had to google it to know what they meant. I obviously knew they were referencing the chairs, but I had never heard of the brand before. Just wondered if anyone else experienced this or if I just grew up under a rock or something.

In my part of the world we just refer to them as La-Z-Boy recliners. La-Z-Boy is a brand name but also the general word we use when talking about them. I hadn’t heard BarcaLounger before the show, so maybe it was a US term at the time.

Pretty sure it’s a brand name for comfy reclining chair. My great aunt had one so I knew what it was but they were big in the 80s and 90s. Edit: they were actually developed in the 40s so I’m a few decades off 😂

We had a La-Z-Boy for twenty years that appeared to be quality merchandise... except that we made an unwise choice of fabric, a sort of woven-burlap fabric, which never tore or wore through but slowly and gradually got shabbier over the years. We eventually replaced it with a BarcaLounger, which we've had for nearly twenty years, and also appears to be quality merchandise, with the leather cover showing very little wear.

I purchased a recliner that wasn't anywhere near a top-quality brand or price, and it just hasn't been comfortable.

No, they’re very bad quality now. I bought a nice looking leather reclining chair and sofa from them about eight years ago. After three years, the “leather” started peeling. They both look like absolute garbage now. Their service is also non-existent. I tried to have them fix it under warranty but they blamed it on me, claiming that I must have used a cleaner on it (I did not) or that I had greasy hair (???). I had, however, purchased their extended warranty, so I contacted the company that ran the extended warranty who also refused to fix it because they said it was a manufacturer defect. So they don’t stand behind their product or their extended warranty. Terrible company. Hancock and Moore offers lots of recliners, but I think there's been a transition to mostly powered units. You'll need to check. Century also sells a few manual recliner models. If you prefer modern styles, have a look at Himolla, a German brand. Their overall and motion mechanism quality should surpass American offerings.
