TIL that Barry Manilow didn't write his huge 1977 hit "I Write the Songs". It was actually a cover of a song first recorded by The Captain and Tenille, written by Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys.

TIL: Barry Manilow's hit "I Write the Songs" was originally recorded by The Captain & Tennille and was written by a member of The Beach Boys

And "The Captain" wasn't a captain and most of The Beach Boys weren't surfers! We've all been duped by a bunch of phonies.

What's the joke about the song "I Write the Songs that Make the Whole World Sing"?
The joke is that Beach Boy Bruce Johnston wrote the song and multiple artists recorded and released it within a short span of time. The song came out in 1975, but was released by Captain and Tennille. A few months later, David Cassidy released this song. And a few months after that, Barry Manilow released the song at the end of the year. So 3 versions of the same song were released within one year. In 1977, original writer, Bruce Johnston, released his version of the song. The only version to become a huge hit was Manilow's. By the late 80s, when this eppy of Full House was recorded, everyone was sick of this song- yet no one would let it die. It was a joke for the parents watching who lived through this era. r/thebeachboys on Reddit: Thoughts On 'I Write The Songs'?
April 24, 2024 -

Hey all! Last post like this I promise. I was wondering what do you think of 'I write the songs' by Bruce Johnston. I'm not asking about any particular version but I am going to give my opinion on the most popular version which was recorded by Barry Manilow. Personally I think it's okay, Manilow's production is a little heavy handed but so was a lot of 70s pop. Frankly I wish the beach boys had done a version of this, It kind of reminds me of 'Add some music to your day'. Just imagine what they could've done with the chorus harmonically. Of course Johnston was out of the group by then so I understand why it wasn't recorded. I think the lyrics are pretty nice and the whole song sounds a lot like Johnston's other compositions. Anyway I thought it'd be interesting to hear what ya'll think of this song and it's many versions. As always thanks for reading!!

🎼They Write the Songs, Pt. 1: Barry Manilow Hits as Recorded by the Original Songwriters
February 20, 2023 - But, from my Buena Park (CA) apartment, I also made a mix-tape of Barry Manilow songs as recorded by their original songwriters…yes, it helped that they had their own recording contracts (and, that I already had their albums)! Having seen Barry in concert a small handful of times in the late ‘70s, I recalled that he didn’t often mention the original songwriter before or after singing another’s composition. And, despite his signature melodic declaration, “I Write the Songs,” I discovered, early on, two things: He didn’t write that one, and I couldn’t recall him mentioning Bruce Johnston’s name from the stage, either!

Tim from Onif you listen o the lyrics , they give away the influence of this song.....it describes fallen angel lucifer and how his musical gift was and is used to infect the world. God gave him a beautiful voice but he used it for evil. Donna Jenkins from OhioEvery time I’d see Barry Manilow introduced on a TV program or music show he was often introduced with “Here he is….THE MAN WHO WRITES THE SONGS!” Lol!!

November 13, 2022 - It’s fairly unlikely you will have heard the writer’s version of it even though it was released as a single because no one really plays it. Come to think of it, no one plays the original version either which was not by is scribe. Many people have covered the song but thankfully I’ve never heard any of its interpreters claim they wrote it. The most well-known is arguable Barry Manilow’s version which topped the American singles chart in 1975 giving him his second US chart-topped after Mandy exactly one year earlier.
