TIL that Barry Manilow didn't write his huge 1977 hit "I Write the Songs". It was actually a cover of a song first recorded by The Captain and Tenille, written by Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys.
Thoughts On 'I Write The Songs'?

And "The Captain" wasn't a captain and most of The Beach Boys weren't surfers! We've all been duped by a bunch of phonies.

Hey all! Last post like this I promise. I was wondering what do you think of 'I write the songs' by Bruce Johnston. I'm not asking about any particular version but I am going to give my opinion on the most popular version which was recorded by Barry Manilow. Personally I think it's okay, Manilow's production is a little heavy handed but so was a lot of 70s pop. Frankly I wish the beach boys had done a version of this, It kind of reminds me of 'Add some music to your day'. Just imagine what they could've done with the chorus harmonically. Of course Johnston was out of the group by then so I understand why it wasn't recorded. I think the lyrics are pretty nice and the whole song sounds a lot like Johnston's other compositions. Anyway I thought it'd be interesting to hear what ya'll think of this song and it's many versions. As always thanks for reading!!
