For people that are wondering about the new plan and the cryptic "basic individual" that's not marked as premium — you still keep all the basic features of your basic music plan. The literal difference is that there's no access to audiobooks. Once I secured the basic, it showed all the features: save music, listen in any order, etc.

Is this not insane to anybody else? I have been trying for the last couple of days to change to the basic spotify family plan from the premium spotify plan so I dont have to pay for audiobooks I dont use. But apparently if you change your subscription after June 20th, youre not allowed to have the basic plan?? After searching online theres no solution to this either
I love spotify and have been using it for 5+ years at this point but this is crazy to me
I just got done with a hour long chat with support. I'm trying to switch our Premium Duo plan to a Basic Family Plan so I can add our kids and opt for a plan that doesn't include audio books to save money. After an hour between two people, they told me I can't "downgrade" my account to a Basic Family Plan.
Is anyone else dealing with this bullshit? I've been a premium subscriber for over ten years and I haven't complained even though podcasts and audiobooks have been forced on my subscription while fees continue to rise.
After all my loyalty, this may be the breaking point.
And they also told me there's no way to contact them via phone. I wanted to escalate my request. Does anyone know how to reach support via phonecall?
I am a free user who over the years has seen spotify hike its premium price to ridiculous amounts, so the best thing to do instead is sail out into the seas where danger lurks use spicetify. However, Spotify's new basic plan has been in the news for quite some time. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to upgrade to that instead of Premium. Why?
I have a family plan with six people and I just downgraded us to the basic plan (when Spotify was going to automatically renew us for the more expensive premium plan) because it didn’t seem fair that everybody would be paying extra when I’m the only one who would get to listen to audiobooks. Idk if I missed something?
Why ysk: You keep all Premium features except for audiobooks and it’s a few bucks cheaper.
No idea when they started rolling out but I found out I was unintentionally paying a more expensive price for a feature I don’t even use.
The offer is only available if you are already a Premium user.
Edit:
For duo/family plans, only the primary account holder can change the subscriptions.
The offer seems to be country-specific so not everyone may have them yet.
So last month I had cancelled my Spotify to switch to the basic plan (the prices were raised and I REALLY don't care about the audiobook feature enough to pay extra for it). I was informed you can only switch from an existing plan to the basic so I set up my individual premium and now I have that again. When I go under settings>account>See available plans all the plans except the basic show up. I also tried looking under billing and didn't have any luck their either. Do I need to have an account for a month or longer to switch or something? I'm honestly more than a little fed up with Spotify at this point so alternative music streaming suggestions would also be appreciated
I was going to cancel my Spotify plan cause I have 3 month Apple Music trial but I noticed that my current plan is cheaper than Basic? This doesn’t make sense to me cause I thought the premium plan was $12.69 CAD now!
What's lost if we switch to basic family plan?
I see audiobook listening is but what else is?
Do any of the following change:
Audio quality
unlimited skip
Offline Listening
Addfree listening
I've seen online that the basic individual plan is the same as the premium but without audio books. Since I don't use audio books, I figured I could switch over and save a bit on the plan. When I went to do so, it doesn't allow me. I see the plan as an available option under settings, but when I actually click on "get basic individual" the plan isn't there as an option. I also tried to see if it shows up only when you first sign up for premium and so I tried my other non-premium account, and it wasn't even mentioned there either.
I checked and my app is fully updated it, and I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling and nothing changed. Did they get rid of the plan and forget to remove it or something?
The pics attached to post show what I see. Basic plan under settings with all the other plans, the get button, and then the full list of plans you can actually click on and switch to.
I recently signed up for Spotify premium. Some of my friends call me crazy. But as a mathematician, I decided to break down the math for them, along with you.
Let’s start off by assuming that you bought the Spotify personal plan, which would cost you about $9.99. Seems pretty pricy, right? Nope!
According to most websites, Spotify gives you a range of one-four minutes of ads every hour. To keep things simple, let’s just say that you get 2:30s of ads every hour. According to https://headphonesaddict.com, people in the U.S. listen to an average of 26.9 hours per week, but let’s just round that down to 25 to keep things simple. Here’s the data we have so far:
-
You listen to 2 minutes and 30 seconds of ads every hour.
-
You listen to 25 hours of music every week.
Looks good? Good. 2:30s of ads an hour doesn’t sound like too much of an inconvenience, but what if I told you that that’s a whopping 1:02:05s of ads every single week? Imagine having to listen to a whole hour of advertisement. And that adds up to a massive, MASSIVE 4 hours, 29 minutes, and 45 seconds of advertisements every month. Let’s re-analyze what we have so far.
-
You listen to 2:30s of advertisements every hour.
-
That adds up to be 1:02:05s of ads every week (150 seconds × 25 hours a week)
-
That also adds up to 4:29:45s of ads every month. (1:02:05s × 4.34524 weeks in a month)
-
-
You listen to 25 hours of music every week.
These numbers are getting pretty high. Without these calculations, it would be hard to believe that you have to bear with *four hours* of advertisements every month. This is where premium comes in. Assuming that you’re spending $9.99 a month on premium, you’re spending quite literally 0.0006 cents to remove every second of advertisements. To put that into perspective, that’s like if you took a penny and chopped it into 16 pieces, and spent each piece to skip a second of advertisements. Even better, that ads up to be just a little bit over three cents to skip a minute of ads. Let’s just re-analyze our data again.

That’s only three cents to remove a minute of advertisements, crazy!

I mean I think it’s quite obvious that Spotify Premium is obviously worth it. And those calculations are based on the individual Spotify Premium plan, not even the family plan. Assuming that six people are all using the family plan, each person is only paying $2.50 a month for their plan. That lowers the 0.036 cents to less than a cent (0.00924).
It’s crazy to think that everything I have calculated is only for advertisements. There are plenty of other rich features that come with premium, including unlimited skips, downloads, and some others.
I’m not here to say that you should be Spotify Premium, but please, stop saying that it’s a waste of money.
Tl;dr: premium is not a waste of money!1!!
Don't forget to switch to basic family with the price increase if you're the account holder and not using audio books!
Back to $16.99USD on basic... For now.
If you’re on a Spotify plan that includes monthly audiobook listening time, you can switch to a cheaper music-only plan by changing your subscription to the Spotify Basic plan, which was launched specifically to offer a lower-cost option without audiobooks. To do this, go to your account settings on the Spotify website or app and select the Basic plan, which provides ad-free music streaming and offline listening for a lower monthly price.
Spotify have been very quiet about telling users this information …..
