r/uktravel on Reddit: London to Bath and Stonehenge in one day?
February 7, 2025 -

We are staying in London but hoping to see Bath and then the Stonehenge tour on the way back. This is a long day but are there any pitfalls I should plan for that make it a bad idea?

7:00am – 9:00am depart London by train, arrive Bath

9:00am – 4:30pm explore Bath, have lunch

4:30pm – 5:30pm train from Bath to Salisbury

5:30pm – 6:00pm Taxi from Salisbury to Stonehenge

6:45 – 7:45pm Stonehenge experience

8:00 – 8:30pm Taxi from Stonehenge to Salisbury

9:00 – 10:30pm train from Salisbury to London

The pitfall is that no British person would do this. Instead these would be separate trips as these places are nowhere near each other. The only people I’ve ever heard talk about these trips are Americans, and they usually include Windsor on the itinerary. There are coach trips doing this for American tourists that you could use if you do want to do that. Bath could and should be a full day from London as there is more to see than the baths themselves. It’s a lovely area to walk around and get some lunch too. I know you have some hours scheduled - but to then head on to another attraction sounds exhausting, why not stay the night in Bath? It’s beautiful and better than trekking on somewhere else right away. Stonehenge is in a completely different area and ideally accessible by car. I’ve been to the solstice and touched the stones several times. I wouldn’t bother going otherwise as honestly it’s a long way from London if you can’t get that close to the stones. I would check that your experience actually allows you past the rope? If you’re going to Stonehenge Id also go to Avebury and the stone circle, personally I feel it’s superior and it’s always much quieter. There are loads of barrows in the area and a lot to explore if you’re into history.

Have you considered a tour? I did The English Bus’s Stongehendge and Bath tour last year and it was great. Just hop on the mini bus in London and they do all the driving. The tour guide was great and kept the day very entertaining. It’s a long day but just having to get back to the bus was much easier than trying to organize separate transportation.
