Bathroom lighting ideas?
Do yourself a favor and get off of Amazon and find a local lighting store with a showroom to get ideas of what you personally like. I'd suggest a lighting store over something like a big box hardware store because you'll get a better selection, better quality brands (Try to avoid fixtures that have integrated LED's, but if you do go down this route, do not buy cheap builder-grade crap as the chances of failure and lack of customer support are higher), and much more knowledgeable sales staff. Trying to figure out what you want from Amazon pictures is not the way. Lamps Plus is an example of a common lighting store. That said, the lighting department in big box stores does tend to be good enough to get ideas on your own, so it's not like you have to avoid them. There are just better options. That said, I personally usually prefer frosted lights in a bathroom, but this is totally personal preference! You can do either! Clear lights can look nice if you already have plenty of task lighting and want to add some accent lights. Also, you're on the right track adding wall lighting. Having only recessed overhead lighting results in awful shadows, but the extra brightness on your countertop is very nice, so it's often worth having along with your wall lighting. More on reddit.com

Most flattering bulbs for bathroom lighting?
Something else to consider for “flattering” light is diffusion, contrast and symmetry. If you put a high CRI light directly under your chin in a pitch black room you’re going to look like a monster no matter how pretty you might be. The diffusion makes a difference in the flattery. Also the placement. A particularly forgiving lighting arrangement is called “clamshell” lighting which places two diffuse sources like a large book or corner of a room in front of your face or slightly above eye level. Finally, you may or may not want some backlighting or other way to fill in the room. In a small space with white(ish) walls, you’re bound to get reflections; maybe some sunlight through a window. However, consider at high-end retailers how they have semi-spotlights (less or no diffusion) which can be flattering on hair; conveniently called hair lights or rim lights which should fall on your head and shoulders. Color temperature doesn’t matter that much in terms of color perception because your eyes will adjust. However, I find that cooler whites help me see details better. If I was doing makeup, I’d prefer a cooler white so I wouldn’t miss anything. Then again I’m not a makeup artist. Bear in mind that you usually don’t want to mix color temperatures so if you plan to use existing lights, match your new lights to those or change everything. These are from film techniques but a face is a face. Incidentally it is not CRI which makes a good film light but TCLI. CRI is for eyes, the other is for cameras. More on reddit.com

Help picking a vanity light?
Milk or frosted glass works better in the bathroom imo because of the glare from clear shades and bulbs. I prefer the second option for that reason. Also stick with brass rather than the black if you are having orange /rust walls. Otherwise it could throw off Halloween vibes....unless you want that look! :-) More on reddit.com

What size bathroom lighting do I need?
The size of your bathroom light fixtures should be proportional to the space. For vanity lights, choose a fixture that is roughly 75% the width of the mirror. For ceiling lights, ensure the fixture complements the room's dimensions without overwhelming it.Expert Tip: In smaller bathrooms, opt for slim or recessed fixtures to save space and maintain a clean, uncluttered look.

r/Lighting on Reddit: Bathroom lighting ideas?
October 29, 2024 -

Doing a light remodel on my bathroom. Currently we have a giant mirror from sink to celling. Going to remove the mirror and replace it with two round mirrors. Want to add some functional lighting by the mirrors for makeup, shaving etc. What is the best solution? Three on the wall, (one of each side of the mirrors one in the middle) or over the mirror lighting or something different? And what types? Been looking at fixtures on Amazon (https://a.co/d/8sbMlJx) and does buying something with frosted glass change the spectrum much and make these kind of fixtures not a good choice for bathrooms? I definitely like the look of hiding the bulb behind the frosted glass. I’m not attached to this style, but would these be decent for bathroom lighting (they are pretty cheap, would be ok spending more)? The bathroom currently has two can lights, one over each sink going to just use these just for general lighting but want something next to the mirrors for grooming and makeup. Thanks!!!

When planning bathroom lighting, layering different types of lights makes a huge difference. Here are a few ideas: Ceiling Lights – A flush or semi-flush LED ceiling light provides even illumination. Mirror Lighting – LED mirrors or wall sconces placed at eye level help reduce shadows on the face, making them great for grooming. Accent Lighting – LED strip lights under a vanity or behind a mirror add a modern touch. Warm vs Cool Light – Soft white (3000K) gives a cozy feel, while daylight (5000K) is great for clarity, especially in small bathrooms. Dimmable Options – If you like relaxing baths, dimmable lights let you adjust brightness to create a spa-like ambiance. Moisture resistance is key, so look for IP44 or higher ratings, especially for lights near showers or sinks. Have you thought about smart lighting? Motion sensors or smart bulbs can be a great addition!
