It can withstand moisture and a high amount of foot traffic making it ideal for bathrooms. It is easy to maintain and typically only requires periodic sealing. Natural stone typically requires sealing once a year to ensure the water beads instead of soaking into the stone and making it darker.

r/InteriorDesign on Reddit: Stone or tile in bath?
February 25, 2025 -
We are doing a primary bath remodel and will have a glass door shower- initially I liked this subway tile with stone floor but then realized the porcelain tile is actually more than stone and stone might feel more high end. I would like a timeless feel. Also, is exposed shower nice or gimmicky?

I did marble. It’s difficult to care for, if I had to do over I’d go with tile… many products to clean glass in the shower can’t be in contact with marble. Less expensive and more durable

LPT: Home Maintenance: Do NOT get a natural stone kitchen floor or shower. They are BEAUTIFUL but a NIGHTMARE to maintain.
I have to convince clients multiple times a week that natural stone is not a good idea in any area that gets wet or is subject to high traffic...so many nice porcelain and quartz options available today that require minimal maintenance. More on reddit.com

Concrete is out, as it would involve reinforcing the subfloor and possibly foundation If concrete is out, natural stone is probably out. Deflection rating required L/720 while regular tile still requires L/360. Also, natural stone has one HELL of an upkeep requirement, can get stained (in the bad way), and is insanely hard to draw those stains back out. Another option could be vinyl planking (personal preference is glue down as the click-lock stuff can have some serious expansion/contraction with surface temperature swings). Has almost all of the advantages of tiles (and some) with much less downsides. As far as actual tile goes, there are porcelain options out there with a slightly grippier texture to them, or there are products out there that can add a bit more grip to them post-install. What types of finishes are available for Natural Stone Tile?
Natural Stone Tile comes in various finishes. Glossy tiles are bright and reflective, but the slippery nature may not be suitable for wet areas like bathrooms. Matte surfaces have low reflection, and their anti-skid property makes them safe to use on floors. Iridescent tiles give a holographic impression and add an interesting decorative touch. Within Natural Stone Tile, we carry popular finishes such as Polished, Honed, and Textured.

when chosen and cared for properly, natural stone tiles can bring organic warmth, texture, and long-lasting elegance to any bathroom or shower space. here are some key considerations to remember when using natural stone tile as an interior design element for showers and bathrooms. water absorption : some stones like marble, limestone, and travertine are more porous and may absorb water or stain more easily, so they need thorough sealing and periodic resealing. durability : stones like granite, slate, and certain dense marbles are more water-resistant and durable, making them better suited for high-moisture areas. finish : choose a honed or textured finish for shower floors to reduce slipperiness.
