I am looking at the Bauer bench grinder with attached LED lamp. It is normally $239, and on sale in my local store for $199. I also have a 15% coupon to use with it, so will be getting it for ~$175 after tax.
I just want some honest reviews from previous owners. Any reason to not go for it? Any safety concerns to be aware of? Any happy/successful metal smiths satisfied with the product? How long is the life expectancy? What is the required occasional maintenance, and the labor/financial costs of the maintenance?
I am looking for something that has medium to long term life expectancy with occasional use and minimal or no maintenance involved. My shop and operations are not that large and mostly consists of tool and knife and jewelry repairs, as well as a small metals refining/recycling operation.

Bauer grinder
It will be perfect. Just set it up per the instructions and go at the slowest speed and you will do fine. I would recommend putting the grinder and the jig on one thick piece of plywood by itself. Then screw that down wherever you like and if you ever need to move it then you can just move that one piece of plywood and everything stays square. More on reddit.com

Project Farm tested both and the Hercules came out better. I have my name on the display Hercules at my local store for when they are allowed to sell it. Couldn’t find any left within a couple hundred miles otherwise. More on reddit.com

As for speeds, with the high speed steel we use, we can't get the tools hot enough for them to lose their temper like you can with high carbon tools, which are mostly hand plane irons and bench chisels.

January 25, 2024 - Project Farm has a test on these. The too long didn't watch summary is get something with a "big motor", a lot of amperage draw. I have an old 3A 8" HF and it's ok, but terribly underpowered if you lean on it. IIRC the most powerful grinder PF tested was an 8-10A Jet model.
