Total Linux n00b trying Bazzite: where to install programs?
if you want to keep your games on separate drive you can choose it in steam overall linux structure is pretty straightforward in userspace, just go with defaults. There is a path ~/ (in bazzite it is short for /var/home/YourUser/ or /home/YourUser/ in non-atomic distros) where basically everything connected to your user located: documents, games etc. Since you don't need direct access to your steam games they are in hidden folders. You can open ~/ (same as /home/YourUser) and press Ctrl+H, you will see dotfiles like .steam, where your styeamgames are located. Your configs in .config, your flatpaks in .var etc Unless you want to do something specific don't touch those, everything in it's place and linked to applications. More on reddit.com

Linux software management is about to change with Bazaar.
We really need as much attention on this as possible. The fact that it's as fast as it is, beating both Discover and GNOME Software when it's just a single person working on it is very promising. All that needs to happen now is polishing, PackageKit integration, and packaging for distros. More on reddit.com

How does the Waydroid tool enable the use of Android applications on Bazzite, and why is it not supported on other Universal Blue images?
Waydroid allows users to install and run Android applications on Bazzite by providing a containerized Android environment. This setup integrates with the Bazzite architecture to maintain system stability and compatibility. However, Waydroid is not supported on other Universal Blue images like Aurora and Bluefin due to likely differences in their system architecture and support ecosystems, which may not align with Waydroid's requirements .

r/Bazzite on Reddit: Total Linux n00b trying Bazzite: where to install programs?
July 16, 2025 -

Hi, trying to switch to Linux after more than 30 years in the MS ecosystem. And where I consider myself an above average informed pc user, Linux has me stumped. For now.

I have put off using Linux for years, because for work I am heavily invested in the Adobe suite (Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects etc), but I switched that part of my life over to a Macbook Pro, so now my pc will essentially used primarily for gaming. Hence: Bazzite.

So I got it installed and updated, and wanted to install my first Steam game, but I have no clue where.

Do I go with the default, which is /var/home? Is that the directory to install programs to?

Or can I diversify, like I did in Windows, where I had a separate drive for all my games?

For now I am using a dual boot to get my feet wet, so currently I just have the drive I installed Bazzite on to install programs on.

So: default directory/folder or create your own structure. And, if so, HOW to create such a structure?

Or just wing it and go for the defaults until I understand the OS?

Install Fedora Linux packages on top of the existing Bazzite image by using the rpm-ostree terminal command. Use for packages that cannot be installed from Homebrew or ran inside of a container. Layered packages can break system upgrades until removed due to dependency issues since the package will have to be updated with the rest of the image.
