Can the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro TR4 effectively cool the 3960x or 3970x?
I have a 3970x on an Asus TRX40-PRO with the Dark Rock Pro TR4. I see all-core loads (including prime95 small) stay around 79C, occasionally hitting a max of 83C. But my highest temps don't actually happen in all-core loads... they happen with 8-12 core loads, yielding ~90C, possibly because I end up with "hot spots" in the active CCXs (as the per-core power draw is 2 to 2.5x higher in a partial load than in an all-core load on the active cores). I wonder if the 3960x is slightly harder to cool with fewer cores and more power per core. I actually started with a Noctua U14S, but tried and stayed with the Dark Rock Pro because it sounded a bit quieter, or at least less annoying. But the Noctua was similarly competent thermally, IIRC. Eventually I decided to reduce my power limit in the BIOS's PBO options, after reading that a 180 watt limit only redcued performance by 10%. I settled on 220 watts, which testing showed cost only 5% performance but has all-core loads running in near silence with 69C typical, 73C peak temps. Make sure you don't have case airflow issues (perhaps test with side panel off) or insufficient thermal paste. And consider experimenting with reducing your power limit. The noise and extra 60 watt power draw aren't worth the last 5% of performance to me, anyway. More on reddit.com

First off, just know that the Dark Rock Pro 3 actually cools better than the 4, but it’s noisier. Read this . Your case has 176mm clearance for CPU air coolers. The Dark Rock Pro 4 is 163mm tall, and the NH-D15 is 165mm tall. So, they should both fit fine. The NH-D15 also comes in an S variant, which offsets the fans to provide extra RAM clearance, if you need it. It’s 160mm tall. The NH-D15 cools slightly better. Both coolers are very quiet during normal operation, but the NH-D15 can be a little louder as the fans hit higher RPMs. Also, if you go with the NH-D15, you can change the fan orientation to reduce noise. Currently running the Noctua U14S TR4-SP3 with a 3960x, 3rd gen Threadripper.
It Noctua works... but not nearly as well as well as Noctua said it would. Even with the optional second fan, under sustained all-core loads the Noctua is unable to keep the CPU from grossly exceeding the performance throttling temperature. CPU temperatures rapidly rise to over 90C. When Noctua was contacted again, they changed their story, saying those temps were in line with their testing.
Have since contacted 'be quiet!' to see if they had tested their Dark Rock Pro TR4 with the new threadrippers. They also claim that their product is able to keep the new CPUs below the CPUs thermal throttle temperature, but their representative would not specify at which temperature (or even range of temperatures) that it would maintain the CPU.
AMD's information page on the new Threadrippers (until a day or so ago) stated a maximum temperature of 68C, an implausibly low figure. With CPU temperatures regularly rising well above 68C, filed a trouble ticket with AMD to confirm that 68C is the proper max. AMD support responded that the maximum temperature is actually 95C. Further, that the performance throttle starts at "About 85C" (their words).
The Noctua U14S is not able to keep the CPU below 85C when under sustained all-core loads. Is the Dark Rock Pro capable of keeping the new threadrippers below their 85C throttle temperature? Be quiet is clearly saying it can, but so did Noctua prior to purchase.
TLDR - Has anyone tested the Dark Rock Pro TR4 on the 3960x or 3970x with sustained all-core loads?

I’m running the Dark Rock Pro TR4 on my 3970X system (thanks for the advice elsewhere, the O11 Dynamic XL is a really nice case and just as quiet as you said) and it seems to idle in the 38-42C range, temps in the 60s-70s when running my typical compilation workloads. Gets up near 80c when doing a clean kernel compile but not exceeding that by much IIRC. AIDA64 stress tests hit > 90C easily though. Oh and I’m using the Carbonaut pad not thermal paste. What’s your workload that’s hitting those 85C temps? If it’s something easy to test I might give it a try.

I have Dark rock pro 4 on my 2700X - temps dont go over 72C during load (and that is during heavy load, like cinebench, while during gaming CPU is below 60C, usually around 54C due to low CPU load games have)

Hey guys so i'm working on my first build in 15 years. I've purchased a crosshair viii hero board, ryzen 9 3900x which i'm putting in a panzer evo case. I thought I purchased a rock pro 4 cooler but it appears to be a rock pro tr4. Clearly the mounting bracket didn't work. Is this as simple as getting the proper bracket or are the coolers all together different?
Also with the panzer evo cases are the mounds the standoffs or what? they only sent 2 standoffs with the case and the instruction manual shows that there should only be 2.
