I'm really interested in hearing words from other languages that you find beautiful.

I'm especially interested in words that start with J that could be used as a middle name, like jaeger/jäger. My only issue with jaeger is it means "hunter" which is unappealing to me.

Thank you for any contributions to the thread!

r/MonsterHunter on Reddit: What are the monsters called in your language?
March 20, 2024 -

I've always played the games in English, but I've recently convinced my boyfriend to play MHW:I with me, and he insists on always playing jRPGs in Polish, our native language, mostly out of curiosity. Now, Polish MHW has some excellent endemic life names (like "goryczek", pronounced "goh-ree-check" for the bitterbug, which literally means "the small tiny bitter creature", or "oczystka" - oh-cheese-tzkah" for the nullberry, literally meaning "the tiny thing that clenses") but I've also noticed some interesting monster names in polish. For example:

  • Rathian is called "Rathiana", with an "a" at the end, to indicate that it's a female noun class

  • Nergigante is "Nergigant" without the "e" at the end, because the word "gigant" in Polish means "giant"

  • Bazelgeuse is called "Bazelgez" and it's pronounced "buh-zel-ghuz"... For nor reason I think?

  • Azure Rathalos is called "Lazurowy Rathalos" which means "Lapis Lazuli Rathalos", you know, like the mineral

  • Brute Tigrex is called "Zwalisty Tigrex" which just means "Big Tigrex"

  • Scarred Yian-Garuga is "Oszpecony Yian-Garuga" which means literally "Ugly Yian-Garuga"

I'm probably missing a couple, but those are the ones that felt most different from their English names. So, if you're playing in your language, if it's any other language than English or Japanese, what are some of the most interesting monster name translations?

Edit: spelling
