This is how all compressed mattresses are packaged. From $100 Walmart beds to $2,000+ custom BiBs, they’re all compressed & rolled. Most of them in the exact same machines. After the blooming period, there is absolutely nothing different between a previously-compressed, and never compressed mattress. In fact, most foam-core beds you buy will have been compressed to a similar level during manufacturing, just as part of the foaming process. Answer from Btherock78 on reddit.com

BedInABox® Mattresses In A Box - Better Sleep Is A Box Away® | BedInABox
We offer mattress in a box options in all standard mattress sizes and in firmness levels that support every sleep need. A high-quality memory foam mattress is often the best mattress choice for all sleep positions. Our BedInABox® mattresses are designed to contour to your body, providing support and pressure relief whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach.
Bundles
Every BedInABox® is designed and developed in-house, allowing our team of experts to tirelessly improve our sleep technologies and test each component of your mattress in a box before it ships free with a risk-free trial period.
Foundations
However, we recommend pairing your Clever Connect™, Platform BedInABox® or MotionInABox® Adjustable with a BedInABox® mattress for your best sleep experience. A traditional box spring is most often paired with an innerspring mattress and provides more give than a foundation.
Adjustable Beds
Because we are the only brand that makes our own foam, assembles every mattress and ships it all from our own factory in North Carolina. So not only is every component of your mattress in a box made in America, but your BedInABox® is made under one roof!
Toppers
We’re on a mission to deliver better sleep in every box. Each BedInABox® mattress is constructed with American-made, CertiPUR-US® Certified memory foam that is safe for all ages and designed to stand the test of time. Learn more about why real sleepers love their BedInABox® mattresses.

People also ask

Does a Bed in a Box need a box spring?

No, a box spring is not required. You can place your mattress directly atop the platform bed itself. This will give your mattress the proper support, preserve its lifespan, and lower the profile height.

How do you set up a Bed in a Box?

First, lay the box on the floor. Then, remove the mattress from the box. Next, unroll the mattress, and place it on a foundation or directly on the bed. Remove the inner bag and position your mattress. Make any final adjustments, and you're all finished. It doesn’t get any easier!

What is the problem with mattress in a box? Compared to mattresses that...is not in a box.
Salesmen typically don't recommend bed-in-a-box models because they threaten their bottom line. There are some differences in construction, but in some ways boxed models are superior and in some ways non-boxed models are superior. Additionally, many manufacturers use the exact same coils on their boxed and non-boxed options, so it's not always a difference there either. The point below about not being able to roll wire-tied coil units IS a good one though. If you're looking for a tired coil system, you typically can't get these in a box (with the exception of a few rare coil units). More on reddit.com

Are all bed-in-a-box flimsy?
I love my original mattress factory hybrid mattress! It’s built like a tank and it is two sided. There’s no comparison between this bed and those that come in a box. The edge support is outstanding. I am a side sleeper and it works well for me! More on reddit.com

Industry people keep saying not to be deterred by the BiB (bed in a box) compression methods used, but when I watch this video I can’t help but think there is no way this is something I would prefer done to an expensive mattress I want to last for 10 years+. Is this just an extreme example or does Helix and DLX and those brands also compress like this?

I can’t help but feel like common sense says that the industry has just aggressively pushed to convince everyone that this is fine and there is no compromise, only for their benefit.

Edit to Add: I am especially talking about mattresses with springs in them, like very expensive hybrid mattresses.

This is a great question and it’s one without a simple answer. We’ll try to provide information so you can make an informed decision you’re comfortable with. But don’t trust us or anyone completely. We’re all biased. Everyone you hear from in the industry whether they’re a mattress company, a reviewer, a retailer, or a forum commenter is biased. Not because anyone is trying to lie, but because all of us are drawing conclusions from anecdotal evidence, small sample size, and personal experience. Even if we specific numbers to cite, as the saying goes: “There are lies, damned lies, and statistics.” It’s easy to make something sound convincing with data. First, there are a lot of good mattresses out there. Saatva, Helix, Beautyrest, Tempur-Pedic and for the most part they all make solid products. These companies wouldn’t still be in business if their products were falling apart left and right. So anyone saying “X mattress is garbage” or “bed-in-a-box mattresses are all trash” is probably an over generalization. Now, we totally understand the concern about roll-packed mattresses. It can feel unnatural to squish something like a mattress and expect it to bounce back perfectly. But compression and roll-packing is not a new or untested process. Pocket coil units have been roll-packed for storage and transport between factories since at least the 1980s. Open coil springs have been compressed and baled for shipping between factories since at least the 1950s. Quilting foam is compressed for transport and storage at the factories since at least the 1980s. Latex International, for example, used to compress and roll Talalay latex cores for shipment back in the 1990s at least. Even BedInABox, the original brand (not just the concept), was doing this in the early 2000s, long before Casper and other DTC brands made it mainstream in 2014. It would be hard to imagine roll-packing still being so widespread if it consistently damaged products. Big manufacturers like Tempur-Sealy, as well as companies like 3Z (the parent of Helix and Brooklyn Bedding), rely on it for good reason, as it does work as an efficient way to ship a big bulky item. That said, there are some risks. If a mattress is left rolled up too long say six months or more especially with lower-quality foams can develop permanent creases. That is why companies like us and 3Z (parent company of Helix) make to order. The mattress is packed and shipped out the same day so it’s not sitting around in a warehouse compressed for months. Another risk is a rare defect during the compression process. Sometimes a layer doesn’t recover fully. It’s extremely uncommon, but it does happen. When it does, it’s usually very visible, as the material doesn’t return to its intended shape after 24 to 48 hours of expansion. It will show as a crease or divot in the mattress. We estimate this occurs in well under one percent of units, but it is a risk you don’t encounter with flat-packed beds. If it were happening 1% of the time, we and we assume others would have stopped doing it. But, it can be a small inconvenience for the customer, but if you’re working with a reputable company, they’ll take care of it. Send them photos and they should tell you if it is normal or not. More important than how a mattress is shipped is how it’s made and what is supporting the mattress (everything between the floor and mattress matters). In the mattress, foam density, type of foam, coil gauge, number of turns, foam thickness, etc. all of these affect performance and durability far more than whether the bed was compressed. Roll-packing only works when the design supports it. Cutting corners on materials and then compressing the mattress is where problems really show up. If you’re apprehensive, it’s okay to skip compressed mattresses. We've found that if someone has doubts and we try to convince them otherwise, it often leads to buyer’s remorse. Go with what makes you feel comfortable. That’s more likely to lead to satisfaction than specs alone. In the end, there’s no universally “right” answer. Everyone has opinions and biases. Digest the information, trust your instincts and go with what makes you feel comfortable. The more confident you are in your decision, the more likely you are to enjoy the mattress.

Best Bed-In-a-Box Mattress (2025): Comfortable, High-Quality, & Easy To Set Up
When shopping for an online mattress, you’ve likely noticed that many are marketed as “bed-in-a-box” products. This is because the bed arrives quite literally inside a box at your doorstep, ready to be unveiled and placed on a bed frame.
