July 12, 2024 - So while I was looking and pricing I came upon Behr e600 paint. The price was much cheaper, which stopped me and made me take notice. A 5 gallon bucket was $126 compared to a 5 gallon at $196. Seventy bucks is nothing to scoff at, especially when you are on a budget! My problem came when I couldn’t find hardly any reviews of the product.

I'm getting quotes to paint my home exterior in central Texas and the most affordable quote so far mentioned that he uses BEHR. Is this ok to use and have they improved on their products to make it acceptable or should I insist on SW?
I didn't ask the other quotes what paint brand they're using yet, but they're also 1500-2k more expensive. I'm trying to save money, but also don't want the expensive job to look bad once its done.
Aside from any application differences when painting, I'm not sure if I would even notice much different once the final project is complete or if there are any significant longevity differences to justify the price difference. If he's experienced with BEHR, should I just let them go with that, or risk and go with SW for for money?
Apart from just personal preference, I'm also wondering if going with BEHR allows them to profit more due to saving on paint cost or if it doesn't make much difference in either application time or price.

It took me some years but I finally learned not to cheap out on materials. I realized it was false economy as the cost of installation (in this case the actual painting) was much more than the paint. In addition, the premium brands (IMHO) always seem to look better, and definitely last better. Now, the most important question is: how are these contractors preparing the siding for painting? House wash only, scraping where needed (and priming) etc. BTY the "self priming ability of a top coat is a myth (again IMHO). You always need to prime bare wood (i.e. if scraped to the wood). Also consider how good you current coating is. If the under coat is not adhering then it doesn't matter what you put on it.

It doesn't make sense he would use Behr. There's a lot of great paint companies out there and I wouldn't bat an eye at a guy using Kelly Moore, Dunn Edwards etc. But a contractor can open a charge account at SW (or anywhere else) and get excellent pricing. I would be very skeptical of this guy. Ie my comment isn't that "Behr sucks" it's that it makes no sense for a professional doing the most difficult kind of residential paint project would buy his paint off the rack at a home supply store. Sounds like someone not running a real paint company
