May 11, 2020 - The disc sander will have a rest to put the work piece on, which will be nice for sanding things that need to be square to the other sides, and replacement sanding discs are cheaper than belts. The belt sander is really good for free hand sanding, and the round end where the belt loops over is good for sanding curved pieces.

If I got a Rigid oscillating belt sander, would I ever need a disc sander? With the table perpendicular to the sanding surface, I really don't see the difference between a belt and a disc. Am I missing something?

The biggest difference is that a Disc Sander puts a downwards force into the table on the workpiece where as a Belt sander will put a sideways force on it in the direction the belt is travelling. It's kind of like a table saw vs a band saw. With the belt sander the wood can grab and be shot in the direction the belt is travelling. That makes a disc sand a little bit safer. You also get a bit more control on a disc sander because you don't have to hold the workpiece from flying away. For that reason disc sanders were commonly used by pattern makers. As pattern makers have mostly become obsolete due to CNC, 3D printing and their operators disc sanders aren't as common anymore. In the size of machine you're looking at I wouldn't worry about that too much though. It makes more of a difference when you get into the big industrial belt sanders. Personally I'd go for the Rigid. You get a small Edge sander and a spindle sander which should cover 99% of your sanding machine needs. The spindle sander is probably the most useful thing if you intent to do any curved work as sanding those inside curves can be a pain without one.

I'd get the belt sander and skip the disc. The disc might give you a bigger sanding surface, but that belt would be more versatile. I've wanted one of those belt sanders for a while.

On the disc sander always use the downward motion side of the disc to sand. Never the upward motion side as this can throw your part upwards with tremendous force. Always attempt to place your work against the rest on the disc and belt sanders.
