Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Answer from icanucan on reddit.com

May 23, 2014 - I have several bench grinders all of an eastern persuasion and all have the same design of grinding spindle nose as shown in pic1. The problem here is the miniscule "flange" arrowed at "2" which is supposed to help stop the wheel from wobbling from side to side. I bought yet another grinder from the boot last weekend for a couple of quid and on trying it out when I got back home I could see why they wanted to get rid of it.

The idea here is the 3/4" length of the adopters will keep them aligned on the shaft and the close fit will allow them to seat at one position against that really small shoulder. On an import grinder I would not weaken the shaft with any holes for pins or even dimples for set screws. ... Hello, I have a cheap 8 inch bench grinder.

I also remembered that I had an old 5 inch bench grinder that had been gathering dust for years. There was nothing wrong with the grinder and I stopped using it because it was difficult to find suitable 5 inch grinding wheels. Thus the first part of the project was to modify the grinder to take the diamond grinding disc and to provide a suitable grinding rest.

June 25, 2011 - I've used cut-off wheels in my surface grinder and they work great, albeit slow, to cut off tool steel and the like. You would want a non-shattering-one to use in a bench grinder if that's all you had.

Every wheel I have purchased has been significantly out of balance. So I made my own purposely unbalanced keepers for each wheel that can be rotated to achieve perfect balance of the wheel. I also mounted the grinder on a stand that allows the height of the grinder to be adjusted.

The supplied grinding rests are not really that good on these grinders so I made some new ones. The left table uses the mounting pieces from the original rest. However you will notice that I added an ingot of lead for dampening vibration. Should have made the tables from cast iron but I did not have any and I had plenty of aluminum.

November 23, 2018 - My 6" bench grinder came with some pretty cheesy tool rests and totally inadequate spark shields. I want to start grinding some HSS tools to use on my mini lathe so I figured some upgrades were in order. I do plan on making another attachment for doing drill bits eventually.

April 30, 2023 -

Hey there!

I hope everyone is doing great. I was wondering if I could ask for some advice regarding modifications to my 1X30 belt grinder. Here's the one I'm using.

I'm having a little trouble with tracking sometimes - the belt stays taught and doesn't wobble too much, but it always seems to go towards the left side. Any ideas on how I can fix this? Would rounding off the wheels help?

Another issue I'm facing is with the table - the gap between the belts and the table is too big, making it hard to brace stuff against it to maintain good angles. Do you have any suggestions on how I can fix this?

Also, the platen isn't very flat and doesn't touch the belt properly, which makes it difficult for me to achieve good grind lines. Any tips on how I can improve this?

Lastly, have any of you tried making a curved platen for hollow grinds? I have a 3D printer, and I was thinking of making arcs of different sizes, but I'm not sure if they would melt due to rubbing or something. Has anyone had success with this?

I'm open to any suggestions, and these are just a few things I've noticed. Thanks in advance for your help!

Most people are going to tell you to get a better grinder. I didnt have that option for a lot ifnyeara. Tracking: put a single layer or two at most layers of electrical tape around the middle of the top wheel of your grinder. That will give it a bulge that helps tracking. Work surface: man I hate to tell you this, because its my biggest kept secret for making shitty tools better. Read to the end. Go to online metals.com. Order a 10 or 20 pound proto box of stainless steel scrap. Inside will be a collection of 11 inch or smaller rods, tube and slabs. They are various thicknesses and sizes. I use them to make jigs, and guides and cutting surfaces for my Grizzly 1 x 30, my grizzly bench top band saw, my 40 drill press. Also use them to make tools for odd jobs. Its the best $20 you will ever spend on your shop. Shipping costs another 20 because the shit is heavy. I also ordered their brass and copper boxes. Brass is my new favorite metal after making knives for a few years. Its really easy to work with and its beautiful. Platen. I can't help with that. I have a 3d printer, but I would be worried the PLA or ABS might not survive the friction, at least not well enough to use as a guide. I upgraded to a 2 x 72. Grizzly 2x 72 was on-sale a couple weeks back for $550. I got it for 750 a few years ago. Believe me, it hurt spending that much, but its my most used tool for everything. Have not regretted it once. Hope this helps.

For the platen, make a longer, flatter one out of a piece of scrap. It's pretty easy, one bend and 2 holes. You can also order a glass platen face from littlebearknives.com, he will cut a specific length if you ask. Dead flat surface and won't dish or groove. Best improvement I made to my 1x30. I never used the work rest, no idea. For tracking, make sure the rear guide wheel is moving freely, they usually come over tightened. You can also take that rear bit apart and put a stronger spring in place of the old one, any decent hardware store will have a spring section where you can match the diameter of the old one. I got a stronger one that the old spring would nest inside, the machine tracked much better once it had proper tension.

How to Turn a Cheapo Bench Grinder into a Buffing Machine – LINE10 Tools
October 29, 2025 - Now it's time to choose the right buffing wheel for your grinder. you should choose a Buffing wheel with a center hole that fits onto the arbor perfectly, if the hole is larger than your arbor, the wheel will not be center and will wobble like crazy. The most common arbor size is ½ inch, which should work for most standard bench grinders.
