I’m in my early 20s so I look back at animated movies in the 2000s with a lot of fondness. Movies like ‘Surf’s Up’, ‘Madagascar’, ‘Ice Age’ and ‘Ratatouille’ have always been special to me. I feel there’s a general consensus that animated movies nowadays are not as good as the ones we grew up with. For example, ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ wasn’t as well received as its predecessors, and ‘Wish’ didn’t conjure a lot of excitement.
That being said, animated movies nowadays aren’t all bad. The Sonic movies have devoted fans, and I really thought TMNT Mutant Mayhem was fantastic. Animated movies 15-20 years ago weren’t all great either. Disney’s straight to DVD sequels like Aladdin 2 were pretty bad for the most part.
I’d like to get your perspective. Has the quality of animated/kids movies really gone downhill or are we looking at the genre through a lens of nostalgia?
